Maxtor SATA Hd's
I'm thinking of getting a Maxtor SATA HDD, specifically, the: DiamondMax Plus 10 200GB SATA 7200 RPM 8MB Cache
Anyone here had any experience with this series of Maxtor drives? What are the Pros and Cons? I know that it's going to sound odd, but I plan on using it strictly for backup purposes. I already have 2 other Maxtor IDE hdds (see sig), and I've been happy with the Maxtor's performance. I can get it at Monarch computers for 116.00 + free shipping, and that sounds pretty good, especially since I have dealt with Monarch before.

if you're going that big, you might want to look at getting the 250 with 16mb cache. that is a super fast drive.

Yeah, I know that the ones over 200G have 16M cache, but $$ is the biggest consideration. Also, 99% of what I'll be doing with new hdd is archiving from an ATA 133 drive. I'll be using it to store .rar versions of operating systems. I'm using HyperOS, and really want to backup my current systems.
You can get more info on just what HyperOS is here: http://www.hyperos2002.com/

I've got a couple of Maxtor 120Gb Sata drives and they've been in my rig for over a year and work fine. I mainly use them for storage but did use them in RAID0 for a while as my main system array.
The 200s should be fine. |

But, if you can't wait, I'd say go for it. DM10s are great drives all around. DM9s were great, and I've read that DM10s are better so, that says a lot.

Yes, I had a few issues at first install but that was down to drivers/sata implementation on the Nv3. A clean install and new drivers as well as doing away with the raid array so I can have four sata and all is well. They're a good fast drive and fairly quiet too.

I have also been running 2 10's in Raid 0 you a year now and these drives have been awesome. Is it more backup space your after? Like on top of what you allready get with the dual OS set up? So that if both of your Windows installs crash and burn then you will have a 3rd alternative? Or is it because you need an extra space for the storage of the second OS. If it is for a 3rd back up then I think your the most prepared PC user in the history of the tech world as far as having back up's go.

If you look at my sig you will see that I use a little known application called HyperOS. It allows for multiple, independent Windows and Linux installations.
This site can explain it a lot better than I can here: http://www.hyperos2002.com/ They have asked me to do some beta testing for them, and I want to zip/rar (a nice HOS feature) all of my existing OS (12 in all) so that I don't lose them should anything go wrong. I plan on making 2 100G partitions on the new HDD, and using it strictly for backup purposes right now. I may, sometime in the future make it my Primary HDD, and run the OSs from it, but for the time being it's just for storage.

that drive will be perfect for you. the performance vers is not needed 'cause of your stated use. imo that drive is the best bang for the buck right now.
