pc hangs when loading windows

Hi , got a 2 year old dell machine that I want to sell cuz I just got a new and mean machine for grown ups to play games on

Thing is that my old pc has recently started to hang a couple of times when loading windows(for about 0,5 sec). This started when I rebotet the bios. Had to do it to get a network adaper workin, though it wasnt that, it was a dead lan cableIs.
The pc is works alrite. no problem. And it has always been a very stabile pc. But I dont feel like selling it to someone if it hangs on loading win.
I realy dont now what I should look into to so any help is apreciated. btw have tried reinstaling windows.
thx

0 to 5 secs doesn't seem like much time to me, is it that big a deal? If it runs fine after boot, it might not be a problem at all.
For troubleshooting purposes, when does it hang? At post, at log on? etc. Is the system crashing? What type of system, any other specs.

hello, It only hangs about a half sec ,, most of the time twice when loading windows. The blue loading sign in the loadingsrceen for win. hangs. So its not a big problem if I was gonna use it myself. But would be nice to get it al ship shape so can get a little money for this pc.

its a p4 533 fsb with 1024 ddr300 i think with a very ordonary samsung harddrive.
And of cuz its a dell so it a bit hard to get all the detailed specs for this pc but I can try to dig into it if that would help.

Hi,

i read your message 3 times and what i get is the progress indicator within the progress bar hangs for 0.5 second, and it hangs about 2 times during Windows loading ?

so, if i understand correctly, then, that behavior itself does not indicate anything wrong with the PC, that's just normal behavior...

It's most likely Windows looking for an IP address. This can happen with DHCP which has Windows requesting an IP address from a network source (like a router or gateway/server). If it doesn't get one it will autoassign one, and can look like Windows has hung (it takes time before Windows gives up trying to get an IP). If you are using a router there isn't much you can do as you need to get the address from the router (and it's most likely just a communication delay), but if you are using a direct connection (pc to modem directly) you could assign an IP address to the network card, but only do this if you are using DSL. If you are using a cable modem you would be assigned an IP address by your provider, and assigning an address would screw it up.

Although this is the more likely answer it could just be a piece of software or device driver that gets loaded at bootup (such as anti-virus, mouse driver, or any device driver).

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Neither case indicates a problem with the machine. It's just the way Windows acts at times.
