i have this 40gb quantum drive and i have had it connected before and had no problems.
after i installed my new watercooling kit i couldn't get it to show up in BIOS or windows. i have since then changed ide cables and i can now see it in BIOS. but now the computer freezes when trying to load windows off of my 36gb raptors in RAID 0. not sure what could be the problem. i looked in BIOS and the IDE drive is not onthe boot order or anything else that i can see that would do this. i even disconnected all the ROM drives and changed channels. still no workie any ideas. specs. AMD 3200+ MSI K8T800 neo FSR 2 36GB raptors RAID 0 i also got a 200gb maxtor S-ATA drive, but its disconnected and is a backup drive with windows loaded on it. its only a backup incase the other drives fail. 1gb samsung RAM matsumi dvd rom TDK 4x dvd burner oh and i forgot the all mighty msi mx400 32mb vid card. EDIT: forgot i'm using WinXP pro

Is there anything on the 40GB Drake? If its a drive that has data on it, XP will scan it to make sure its up to the "standards" for file integrity, it basically runs a Scandisk on startup. Is it officially freezing? (you have left it for 20 min, 1/2 hour to see if anything happens?)

what about the jumpers on the 40Gb drive? Is it set to master or slave? I've had the same problem as you before, and it was because the jumper on the HDD was set to master and the jumper was set up as slave.

silly question but do you have the bios set so that it will boot from the raid array before anything else.

i tried all the jumper settings. nothing helped at all. Logla, thats a good question. yes its the only thing set in the boot sequesnce. it seems that this is beginning to look more like the hd problem than a mobo or settings problem.

yeah, i'm not sure. the thing that gets me is that i can see the drive in BIOS. but i can't get into windows with it connected. this is a wierd problem. i might have to try out partition magic to see if it can see it.

Ah, sounds a lot like a dead drive. The reason you can see it in the bios, is because the circuitry part of the drive is ok, just the disk inside or the heads which are buggered.

Personally, I don't think the HD is dead.....yet.
Did you have it configured for NTFS or FAT32? Can you not get into Safemode, either? If it were my experimenting, I'd temporarily disconnect the RAID array and see if I could get it to boot with my Windows CD. And, finally, is your system actually setup so that you can have as many IDE devices as you have connected when you add that HD? I know I'm running into limitations when I have 2 SATA drives connected but don't have Enhanced IDE set in the BIOS. With Enhanced IDE I can run both SATA drives (non-RAID), and FOUR additional IDE drives/devices. Without Enhanced IDE, I'm limited to a total of FOUR in all. |
