Default Post Intel hyperthreading needs Rambus – report

another one from the inquirer which makes interesting reading.....

Quote:
A REPORT BY US based CSA Research claims that Intel's commitment to double data rate (DDR) memory rather than Rambus' RDRAM memory will deliver poor results for users of Intel's E7500 chipset servers and have an affect on hyperthreading.
The report claims that Intel's Xeon dual processor CPUs that use the E7500 chipset and implement hyperthreading, "ring hollow" because of the reliance of these products on DDR.

The report also claims that Intel has deliberately avoided discussing hyperthreading relating to desktop PCs because it doesn't deliver clear benefits.

According to theoretical benchmarks the company has performed, Xeon systems using RDRAM and Hyperthreading would be likely to deliver 27 per cent greater client/server transaction throughput than systems using DDR.

It adds that RDRAM is "inherently more scaleable" than DDR when multiple threads are involved.

That means, claims CSA Research, that anyone planning PC and server hardware systems should buy RDRAM based memory subsystems.

Makes sense to me. I don't understand if you went out and bought a dual Xeon system, why would even go with DDR in the first place? A server should have a big mouth as I like to say. BTW, does anyone remember the formula for amount ram compared to number of users on a network?
