Your thoughts on a new mouse
i have found online (via slickdeals.net...a great site) a logitech mx510 mouse for only $30 (US). usually these mice are upwards of $50. on the same site there is a logitech mx1000 (laser sensor) for only $55, when its usually $80+. i currently use a plain compaq optical mouse which is OK in my opinion, but not necessarily great. i was wondering if any of you use either of these mice, and what kind of performance/benefit increase i would recieve from either the 510 or 1000. btw i don't know the dpi or anything for my current mouse.
ps. also, what sort of mouse pad do most of you reccomend. mine is a piece of paper taped to my desk - looking to upgrade.

I use an mx1000 laser with an icemat and the difference it makes is unreal. very, very precise and really a joy to use.
I've been using optical mice since MS introduced the first one a few years ago and the laser with the icemat is like a leap to another level. They are that good. You first notice that the cursor moves around the screen quicker and in only takes a few hours to get used to. After that, you notice that you seem to have much more control. If you can afford to get the mx1000 with a mat like the icemat, then go for it - you wont regret it. |

Is hardcore gaming in the equation? If so, get the MX510 (or better yet the MX518) over the MX1000. Reports of "pick up" lag deter me from recommending the MX1000. If this mouse isn't for hardcore gaming, then by all means get the MX1000.
As for mouse pads, I don't use one.

Those icemats look pretty sweet, but they are damn expensive. I'm looking for a new mousepad...is there anything similar for less money?

I have mx1000, but like to have mx518 because it's wired and a little more precise because of no latency on wire(when on resolution 192x1440) and good optical sensor. I don't like the buttons of this mx1000, too noisy, and I always forgot to load it, battery keeps it up for 2 weeks.
Good mouse otherwise, I had mx500 before this. As a mousepad, I had everglide but I love fabric mats more as they give smooth/precise touch and doesn't hurt your arm that much ![]() My next mouse will be mx518. ps. don't ever touch on microsoft mouse, you get better accuracy/precise movement with logitech and mx1000 has 10 buttos if that's what you want

as far as gaming surface i use 'eels' on the mouse feet & an xtrac zoom. wonderful combination. & comparitevly cheap.

good one shaga! in this case they are very thin teflon pads you apply to the 'feet' on your mouse. work ok to great depending on the mouse surface you use. a lot of the companies manfacturing pads have various vers of these also. if you buy a gaming pad & the manafacturer makes these i highly rec buying them.

Some pads are made of glass and eats default "eels" very fast and you should have replacements nearby

The explorer and the MX700 are almost the exact same size. The 310 is a tad smaller though. The explorer is by far the most comfortable though.

Well, I'm sorry I'm too late, but I'd have gone for the latest offering from Razor...I tend to like lighter and more sensitive mice, and can't tolerate so many little buttons all over the place...I like to keep it simple. But good buy you got there, apart from the fact that it's a little heavy and big (which could be an advantage to it for some people, and no I don't have tiny hands), it's a good buy indeed.

MX1000 is top if you want something wireless, I prefer wired mice though, simply because of the lesser weight and greater simplicity.
Razer Diamondback and MX518 are equal in that respect, virtually the same sensor, just go for whatever fits your hand better.

Best mouse I ever bought... MS Intellimouse Explorer, first gen. I still use the thing primarily. Everyday for what 7-8 years now. The thing travels with me and get beat to hell. I have yet to have one problem with it, other than all the paint is gone and it looks ratty, it still works better than anything I ever bought. It should, I payed like $90 for it back then, but it was worth it.
