Good Digital Camera
Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting myself a nice digital camera. I'm looking for something that gives some nice pics, but isn't too expensive. I'm not very knowledgeable about digital cameras, so I can't give any specifics on features. Looking for one between $100 - $300 (give or take a few extra dollars). Any recommendations, guys? Thanks!

I would never buy a non-canon digital camera. Thats all my family/friends will ever own also. For the price a A75 is a damn good camera. If you want something a little smaller, a S400 is an amazing camera, but i dont know if that is in your price range ($500 CAD).

I started with a little fuji 3 megapixel and that was fine for the size print I was using anyway, I progressively sought larger formats but never lost sight of the size of the picture. you can do well with just three or perhaps two for routine family portraits, the market is flooded with good point and shoots.
I chose the Canon EOS 20D because I sought to replace my good T-70 SLR that went around the world with me. My old SLR took much better quality pictures than most of my digital cameras anyway. Cant beat film and developing your own work, unless the digital gives you some freedom that you didnt have with the other SLR cameras. It is in the eye of the artist or the photographer to capture the essense of his or her work. A tiny pinhole camera would give you some unique capabilities as well LOL, but I digress.

Moved: To Technology Disscusion and Support as best suited to in here.
Personally I'm a canon man myself - tried nikon, sony etc and canon seems to be my favorite. As for minimum pixels, I wouldn't now go for anything less than 5mp but basically try to go as high as you can afford. Also try to remember that its not all about pixels. Try to find a one with a good quality lense. |

one with OPTICAL zoom...digital zoom is the same as blowing it up in PS..it just stretches the image rather then actually change focal length.
Sony has nice lnses, as do minolta and cannon. Kodak makes some nice ones, but ym friend's died after 3 weeks, so I dunno if I can really reccomend them

If you want an unbiased review of specific cameras I can't recommend Steve's Digicams website enough. This guy has tested every camera you can think of. Steve is a very respected person in the industry, and has been at it for 30 years. He does reviews for other companies/sites, has pics taken from every camera he's tested (ones that will show you what the camera will do in certain situations, and will show you the flaws/high-points of that camera).. God.. I can't do him justice in this thread. You can also check out THIS page. This is his "Best" Digicams according to him page. It's broken down into consumer/ enthusiast/ professional catagories, as well as per-pixel (such as 5-7mp).
If this guy says a camera is good, and you can find it for a good price, buy it. -Tip BTW: Take a look around his site. He's got a lot of useful links, including a forum that you can use to discuss specific cameras, accessory reviews, a tech corner, an area that reviews printers (the best ones for printing off those digi pics), and a lot of other good stuff.

Good link Tipstaff! I'd forgotten about Steve's Digicams. A website I visited a lot when choosing my camera.

Guys I think I found the perfect camera for me. It's a choice between the Sony Cybershot DSC-P200 and the Sony Cybershot DSC-P150. I think the P200 is a better deal although it has lower resolutions than the the P150. What do you guys think?
Btw, thanks for the site, Tipstaff. Steve's review on the P150 was pretty good. |
