All p2p stopped
My problems pretty simple - None of my p2p programs are working anymore. Internet's fine, downloads are fine, just not p2p. I use Ares, WinMX, and Kazaa; Ares and Kazaa won't even connect, while WinMX makes a connection, brings up songs when I search, but cannot successfully download any songs.
I do have a firewall, but I don't think that's the problem. I disabled and closed it, and the programs still refused to work. I even connected a second computer to the internet thru a router from my cable connection - again, internet worked fine, and Kazaa's home page even connected and allowed me to browse within it, but it could not make a connection to the p2p network. This all happened suddenly, like in the middle of a download - it lost the connection, and couldn't retrieve it. I was using WinMX and Ares at the same time downloading different files - both failed at the same time, and haven't worked since. Any ideas? |

I dunno but if you haven't install the connections patch the event XXXX patch (I forget the number)
increases the 1/2 open connections to 50. SP2 limited it to about 10!!!

I think THIS is what your talking about, right Neon?
If you want to patch that file directly you can get it from HERE . This is an annoying thing MS has done btw. Not only does it screw up P2P downloads, but VoIP based proggies too. Which is so stupid since this is the area Intel and Microsoft are starting to spend major monies in. -Tip Edit: BTW.. it could also be that your Internet Provider has locked you up. Some companies will throttle connections to certain ports (like ftp ports, and p2p ports), but I've seen a couple completely block known p2p ports, or at least heavily filter them.

Tip - I think the ISP might be it...Every once in awhile my firewall gives me messages saying someone is scanning my computer on ports 'xx.xx...." If they scanned my comp while i was downloading songs, would that encourage them to lock me up?
I also doubt it's my SP since i tried it on a computer with windows 98, the other with XP. |

If you are like I am and are lacking in the "technical skills" department, but at the same time, miss using WinMX, there is a quick, easy and free solution it is called MXPIE. There is no spyware or anything else bundled with it. For those a little more savvy and courageous, there is even a manual option.
So come on back to WinMX, and download to your hearts content. Thanks to these updates, not even the power of the RIAA can stop a network. IF you have downloaded WinMX and still cannot connect, you can even get personalized realtime help. Just go to this link WinMX Channels Copy the Room name appropriate for your Language and paste it into your WinMX chat screen, then press the Join Button. This works on version 3.53 and up even if you are not connected. It allows you to join into chatrooms set up for you to get immediate help. Everything you need at the MXPIE Website Free and Spyware free. I have also found a site for Computer problem that is nice, prompt and VERY helpful. If there is a problem you need an answer to, they can help. Realtime help available for WinMX 3.53 users having trouble getting connected. Go to WinMX Channels. |

If you are a heavy P2P user and have been tagged by your ISP as that, then they could have blocked the common ports for P2P useage.
I can't tell you the number of times the ISP I work for has had to shut down file sharers because of RIAA finding them and dropping the dime on them. Have you contacted your ISP to find out if they are blocking those ports?

If it happened all of a sudden for no apparent reason, it probably is your isp (especially if you've downloaded like crazy in the last month). Try changing your listening ports inside the programs, and see if you can connect fine a few minutes later. Here is a list of which ports do what. Try setting your p2p stuff up in the private port ranges to start.
