well I was always a massive IBM HD follower, until recently when my deskstar died.

lets hope I have more luck with the WD JB SEs, up to now they have been amazing.

note that the jb's are the only ide drives with 3 year warranties... the rest are 1 year.

my maxtor 30gb 7200's are still going strong, and my 800jb's are incredible

My 30 gig Maxtor is still going somewhat strong. It just sucks when it overheats, even with a damn harddrive cooler.

I had a 30 gig Maxtor ATA-100 that ran great for about a year and then it just kept getting slower and slower.

I think that they start writing garbage to the disk and just start Fu©king up. Just basically reading and writing errors.

Nice...

I got two 60GB ATA-100 7200 rpm from Maxtor over a week ago, I hope they're not at risk as well. But you got me scared for a minute or so.

On a sidenote, I went to Maxtor because of all the bad press IBM drives got, but my 60GXPs have been running like a charm for more than one year now, and they're not exactly sitting there idly.

Sorry to hear that but I warned you some time ago

Since my IBM's died (grrrr) I bought 3 Maxtor, two D740X 60GB and one Diamondmax9 60GB.
Well the new DM9 failed within a week but Maxtor support seems to be better than IBM and sent me a brand new advance replacement within 1 week.

I strongly suggest to monitor the HD temperature as it seems to be a primary factor for failures.
There's a great tool for IDE drives called Dtemp that will show the temp and SMART attributes.
40° C or less is generally accepted as a good value.

Interesting link peroni.

On a related topic, does anyone know if there are other computer case brands than Antec which offer the same possibility to mount a fan on the disk cage ? I did just that for my IBM's and the temperature drop was dramatic. It's barely if I can feel them heat at all now.

Man, I leave my drives running 24/7 and they are never remotely hot to the touch. Rather now that I think of it, they are NEVER even warm...And there is no breeze or fan that goes past them...and they aren't mounted vertically.

Wow. What case are you using, and how are the drives disposed into it ?

I've been running my Maxtor 10GB drive for about 4 or 5 years now atleast and I haven't had a single problem with it!

Although, I must admit, I'm buying my new Western Digital drive soon as I think the good 'ol 10GB is going to die soon. I have another drive but it's used for backup only so I need another drive if this one dies.

Louie are you overclocking your rig? Overclocked hardrives can run really crappy. I've actually had problems when I overclocked too high (above 150mhz(50mhz pci))that my computer wouldn't boot because it couldn't read my hard drive properly.

Drive Temp

I have an old Seagate ST36530A 6gig 7200rpm and it runs perfect at 56 degrees centigrade (Yes 56 Degrees C) and has been doing so for years without a hitch. You cant even hold your hand on it the drive is so hot but it has never ever failed me in any way. I vote for seagate for this one but my next hard drive is for sure going to be a western digital JB because of the warranty changes. Only will accept a 3 year warranty on hard drives myself.
Regards

Well, in the case housing my two new Maxtors I have a similar setup as you do and I did a little check-up last evening. The disk below the floppy drive heats a bit, and although I wouldn't say the one in the 5.25" bay is cool -- it's barely tepid.

I am running Maxtors, IBMs and Western Digitals in several comps, all heat at various degrees, and I can't figure out anything but a fan to keep any of my drives *cool*.

One a sidenote, I personnaly had a Maxtor 120GB 5400RPM ATA-133 dying on me recently after only three months of operation... Got a 7200 RPM replacement w/ a 20€ refund, I hope it will last a wee bit longer.

My hardrive craps out at 147fsb! not before my geforce 2mx, has done a runner @ 142fsb! most of time I either run at 11x140 = 1540 or 11.5x133=1533 I something is going wrong usally drop back to latter for trouble shooting, not that the clock has actually ever been the problem lol!
Previous failures are from other boxes, many of which were clocked, but as they are old rigs I keep the PCI in spec! lol P133 @ 200mhz lol! good old dell Last failure was IBM DLT on Asus Mobo with AXIA 1Ghz @ 1.4Ghz couldn't be sure whether clock killed that, so its now at 1.3Ghz again to keep PCI in spec

Never mind, I found out what to do about the temperature of my HDDs... I leave one pane of the case open. That damn thing is acting like an OVEN when it's completely closed.

I can still feel a wee bit of heating when I touch them, but nothing terrible.

I wish I could use an Antec case for that setup also, but it would definitely blow holes in the budget I had set for this box (and leave me with a spare casing ).
