Pissed CPU Thermal Paste ?

I got an AMD 64 3200 and on the bottom of the heatsink it came with a layer of gray material which im assuming is thermal past. The problem is i dropped the heatsink and it landed on the rug so its no longer smooth and not there in some spots. I was planning on getting some Artic Silver and putting it on there after I clean off the remains of the old material. Any comments, tips, suggestions would be wonderful asI don't wont to f up my first build.

wipe it all off with an old wash cloth(and a little rubbing alcohol, as needed)

The put a small dab of AS on the die of the cpu, and spread it aroudn with a credit card to achieve a THIN smooth layer.

Don't forget to wipe yer credit card off after that either

Well, if you're in no rush to use the cpu, definately wait to get some thermal compound. Just use a kleenex or something to get the majority of the stock gunk off, and then scrub it with alcohol soaked q-tips until you stop getting any more residue on the used q-tips.

I find AS5 is too odd a consistency for spreading easily, I just use the method they have on their website, with putting a dab in the middle and then applying the heatsink on top.

For starters, if you remove your Heatsink from your Processor you have to re-apply thermal paste due to air pockets especially if it hit the rug and therefore would be "contaminated" with dust and such.

When applying AS, I find the best way (or easiest anyhow) is to clean the old paste off and then to place a pea-sized (bit less than that) drop in the middle and when you put your HSF on, rotate it 2-3 degrees to spread the paste. NEVER LIFT THE HSF after you've applied your paste because you'll have to start over. Artic Silver has some instructions on their website.

AS on a Motherboard is very bad, yes. Artic Silver is basically 99.5% pure silver past which conducts electricity so obviously if you spill some on your motherboard, all kind of stuff will happen. I wouldn't worry about it though, AS is thick and doesn't spill or drip or anything. If you're ever applied body fillers, that's kind of the same thickness.
