Powerstrip

How many of you use Powerstrip for overclocking your GPU, custom resolutions, forcing refresh rates on your rigs etc?

im interested to hear your views.

System Specs

When I had a Rage128, I tried Powerstrip - altering clock speed crashed.

The "Rage Underground" tweaker worked better for me.

Now I have Nvidia, Coolbits is the option of choice - though I'd put a heatsink on the card first.

For the other features - run program X in specified resolution, I spotted some freeware that could do it - now where was it??

BUY a tweaking utility? NO WAY!

Mixed response...

I selected "It sucks, causes major problems" because it, well, causes major problems, especially when changing clockspeeds (even when moving back to the defaults!!!). That said, it is always the first out of the gate to support new video cards (like my 9700 Pro... anything else work?), and it is probably the best Everything-And-The-Kitchen-Sink tweaking utility, but I don't think it's very good at anything... very JoaT.

Donator
I always wanted to use Powerstrip but I never go around to it. I also read that you can't change any performance options. Like all that you can change are clock speeds, and I'm fine with coolbits doing that for me. Is there any performance tweaks that you can do to the bios besides the clock speeds?

It works with some video card and does not work will with others so it is a 50-50 chance that it will work for you. I like coolbit better and i do not have to look at the startup screen when XP boots.

I tend to agree with your comments on most of the issues you mention but I suggest you take a look at the latest radeonator, it has worked very well for me with overclocking, refresh locking etc on my 9700 pro. it certainly doesnt have all the options of powerstrip, but I feel it works alot better with the 9700. there is also rage3dtweak, but it didnt like to work with my dual monitor setup and ultramonitor 2, so I binned it. The interface on radeonator is also alot more professional and has a better layout.

oh yes and how could I forget the powerstrip "nag" screen? $30? ermm

I use it but I wouldn't say that I LOVE it. I use it for overclocking the 8500, but I still use UniTuner for the registry settings.

Maybe I should look into the new Radeonator.

ok... btw. I was just joking. Although at first i did think that you meant an actual powerstrip. So i went to google and searched it up. Saw it... and thought it was cool. Although i dont really have it. So pay no attention to my vote.

Point taken...

Yeah, the nag screen is OBNOXIOUS. Esp. since non-administrator accounts have to stare at it for SIX HUNDRED SECONDS. Unbelievable. And I'm gonna download the new Radeonator... I hadn't heard of it. As for performance options... just clockspeeds and monitor frequencies, and the speed "tweaks" (force 16-bit z-buffer, disable fog table, etc.) that I never use except in cases of total hardware incompatibility. It does have nice one-click shortcuts, though. (Googling for Radeonator... now) Sporkpimp out!

Tried it a couple of times, quite liked it but went back to Rivatuner(more functions) for geforce2, when i was running old matrox G100 used Powerstrip as it was the only thing that I could use

I like nVHardPage better for nvidia cards. I haven't bothered to mess with my 9700 Pro because it's already waiting on my CPU as it is!

personally I use Radeonator 2 for refresh fixes and overclocking the 9700... rock solid.
