3.0-3.4 prescott.
anybody that has one of these please post your temps & type of cooling.
any oc temps would be great also. i have a 3.2 on the way & am just trying to get an idea of cooling requirements, oc potential, and some sort of baseline to work with. thx.

idle temp 47 degrees celcius full load temp 55 degrees celcius Cooling is 7 80mm case fans on Xaser III case and stock HSF with arctic silver 5 although the thermal paste hasn't been broken in completely yet. Last edited by Bruuce; May 19, 2005 at 04:07 AM. |

I had one too at one time. did 3.5 at around 40c idle & 45 load. However, I have water cooling. Just remember these things love power.

thx guys. temps are not as bad as i thought. it will have a swiftech mcx 4000 with an evercool 80mm fan mounted on it.
i also have 2 psu - an enermax 350 running my 6800gt, both hd's, & a couple of fans. the enermax 430 runs everything else so power should not be a problem. i notice you both have fairly low ocs. reasons? i do not expect to get the same as my 2.4 @ 3.03 but was hoping to get in the 3.5-3.7 range. without fluid cooling.

I won't be taking it too much higher until the Arctic silver sets in and I get a new HSF even though I would like to heh. The main thing holding me back are the temps. I'd like to get it as high as I can with an ideal full load temp of no more than 55 degrees.
Plus, my case fans are the ones that came with the case. I don't know too much about aftermarket case fans so I reckon it's possible to get the temps lower, but I'm not sure where to look. Good luck with your purchase; make sure you post your new OCs.

Well I have a 3,2 Prescott and with good memory I can reach 3,9 stable, but the heat at full load at that speed was 85+ so I wouldn't recommend it. I run it at 3,8 every day with about 50-57 idle and about 70-80 full load!!
Anyway, I just bought a XP-90 but haven't installed it yet cause my mobo is dead :-(

Hmm all this overclocking sounds tempting but i dont have enough money to get good cooling! the best i can do is not OC`ing my system and open the sides up put some pastic mesh over the sides and buy a $5 fan from the tip!
But how much performace would i get out of my currant system if i overclocked it all (System ram,CPU,GPU`s CPU and RAM ect.) ? and if i flashed my Pro into a XT ? would i get a 10fps boost in all games ? because if i dont iam not even gonna think about it ! |

You could probably get an extra 5-10 FPS just by defragging your HD and cleaning out your registry. What I did for defragging, I wrote down my virtual memory settings, disabled it, rebooted, and ran disk cleanup/defrag. After all was done, rebooted and put back virtual memory the way it was.
As far as cleaning out my registry, I downloaded a trial one from download.com and ran that. If you do clean your registry, make sure you make a back up. I cleaned mine out but I goofed somewhere and I have to manually shut down my system lol. I need to either do a backup or search the 'net for a fix. I'm leaning toward the latter. Either way, good luck. =) |

My OC was from a 3GHz E not the 3.2. I'm rather paranoid when it comes to OC since I normally want the processor to last awhile. I hit 3.6GHz /w no problems but only tried to go to 3.8 a couple of times worked fine but the load temps. were getting over 50c.

Prescott 640 (3.2G, 2MB cache) - In Medion MD8386
Idles at 53C, with AirXL heatsink fan running at 700RPM Burn mode peak is about 67-68C, until the fan catches up and hits 2000+ RPM, before settling to 60-62C on load an a moderate fan speed. Unusual setup... the AirXL is ported to the side panel intake, so draws fresh air directly to the CPU - unfortunately not balanced by either more extraction or intake fans, so the CPU-heated air is spread all over the case at full tilt |

normally i am not comfortable with load temps above 50c. but i think i would be willing to go up to 60c(load) with the prescott.
what sucks is, i get the cpu tomorrow(friday) but probably will not be able to do anything until late next week due to surgery i just had on rt elbow(porn sites will get you every time ).thx for the feedback guys. looks like i should be able to get my goal & stay within my temp range. that or i will probably go with necrosis solution & go fluid cooling.

P4 Prescott Socket 478
Overclocked from 3.0ghz to 3.6ghz using Zalman CNPS7000 and Artic Silver 5. Temperature is around 37c Idle and up to 50c under heavy load. Case temp goes up to 29c under full load. |

good news. i have very similar mb-p4p800- so my oc potential vs temp is looking fairly good.
now if i can just get my arm to heal faster....

lolz.....i'm running a 478 p4 3.2e. I've gotten mine up to 4Ghz no problem. Temps at that speed are around 55 idle and around 70 unde load. Running at stock speeds my chip runs at around 45 idle and around 60 load. For cooling i'm using some as5, a Thermalright SP-94 along with a 92mm Vantec Tornado.
I really would like to hit 4.2Ghz, but my system becomes iffy on stability on anything higher than a 3.92Ghz OC. |

good oc news. do not think i am willing to run temps that high though. this cpu has to last me for a while. as does the rest of the comp.
![]() i will be quite happy if i can hit 3.6-3.7 & stay around 60c under load.

so long as you get pretty decent cooling, you should stay at or around those temps under load. Which chip are you considering to get? a p4 478 or a 775 5x0 series p4? Mind you that the 5x0 series are pretty much the same as the 478s except that the highest clocked one is at 3.8Ghz vs. 3.4Ghz and of course the physical chip itself.
