Questions Regarding Video Card Performance & Gaming.....

HI

Have questions regarding a reccuring problem with my graphic performance in some games.

Not a noob to this but after way too many hours deticated to tweaking, adjusting and otherwise trying to get consistent performance in games, thought I would just ask for some direct advice from more informed folks.

Anyway...I have a pretty good system and despite all efforts of attaining consistent and stable frame rates and quality in HL2, there are these moments when turning a corner when the game almost comes to a halt.

With FPS displayed, I will go frm say 50-70's to solid red (frame rate display color) and like 20-fps. The game takes a major hit.

This appears to happen when coming around a corner or turning the mouse quickly.....

Have tried all kinds of driver settings, quality adjustments, CFG. file tweaks for performance and it is really annoying.
If anyone can help me with this or understand what causes this it would be great. Not one for lots of pleading for hep in forums but this is really annoying, articulalry with a system and card that "doesnt break a sweat with the most challenging games" reputation.....My performance in game is really not that great.

Well, thanks for your time.

This is a common issue with Half-Life 2 which has been fixed with the latest patches.. or at least SOMEWHAT fixed. The issue is known as "stuttering" or "loading on the fly" because your system is loading new textures, sounds, models, etc when they are used for the first time, which in turn results in your system hiccuping while it pulls up the items. This is why is usualy happens when you're turning on a corner.

There are several work-arounds. You can try setting (in your config.cfg) these two commands:

sv_forcepreload "1"
cl_forcepreload "1"

Those will force your PC to pre-load all the stuff used when loading a level. It will greatly lenghten your load time but will help reduce stutters immensly.

Also, be sure to set your maximum FPS using the fps_max XXX command. I usually set my max to 40 because my FPS aren't important unless I dip under 40 which indicates a slowdown. Setting it to a limited value also helps when you're in enclosed areas where FPS would sky rocket and cause visual "distortion" and lag.
