New RAM was BEST INVESTMENT EVER!

My frame rates were slipping. My programs were sluggish...everything was just amis.

My friends said "You need a new CPU which means new motherboard and new graphics card!"

I said "hell I cant afford that"

they said "Well then you wont be able to play games well"

Okay I play ALL my games at max settings and alittle bit of AA\AF. Not alot tho.

Anyway point is, I decided to take a gamble and buy new RAM. I doubled my ram to take it to 1gb. They all said that it wouldnt make a difference because I had 512mb of RAM.

Well let me tell you...its like the day I bought my computer!! ITS SO FAST!! Everything opens RIGHT AWAY and all my games load up super fast and I'm getting over 80FPS in CS:S (maybe more if I turn off vsync. dunno) whereas this morning BEFORE I installed my RAM, I couldnt get it over 40. I'm dead serious. I LOVE THIS!

New RAM = BETTER COMPUTER!

Now I'm wondering what'll happen if I format the ol hard drive. :-D

i experienced the same type of performance gain when i went for a gig also.this was before i really got into finding out about what services i can do without for the type of stuff i do.i got my used ram down from 200mb when idle to about 95mb when idle.this also cut down on cpu activity which made about as big a difference as the gig of ram.

peace out

I did the same thing, it was very nice too...went from 3yo 512 RDRAM to 1g of DDR2 RAM...results were very pleasing, though I could probably use another gig, I have alot of memory eating hobbies

this site has all that blackvipers site does and more.just go to the letter of the alphabet that the service name starts with and it lists the specs of the service and whether it can be disabled all on the same page.it was probably stolen from blackviper but this site is still up.

thingsthings is on a distinguished road

This discussion has incentive to upgrade my RAM. I'm on 512Mb and am experiencing problems with some games. The problem I am having is how do I know what RAM is best compatible with my board. I have a Dell Dimension 4500 which I bought in 2002.

Any suggestions?

TnT (not the dangerous kind)

so what kind of ram did you get??? Did you just get 1 512Mb stick to make 2x256 + 1x512? Or did you replace all your memory and get 2x512 matched sticks???

congrats gemini. i remember when i had 2 x 256 of ram and i bought a new stick of 512 to add to them. surely made a difference in overall system performance. apps like 3ds max and maya weren't opening up quicker, plus they weren't running sluggishly when i had other apps open at the same time.

I always hear that rumor...and yet everyone I know that has tried it(including myself) has had it work flawlessly.

In fact in the manual that came with my motherboard, it shows how to use 2x256mb and 1x512 to run in dual channel mode...so the rumors are false.

Maybe this is how it works on intel chips, but AMD is a different beast entirely. It runs dual channel(even says so on POST)

It's funny that you said that, cuz I heard the same thing. Yet CPU-Z reports that my ram config in my old rig (2 x 256 + 1x 512) is in dual channel mode. Though my board doesn't say it in the POST. It's an A7N8X Deluxe ver 2.0

I have a vanilla A7N8X. same stuff just a normal MCP instead of the MCP-T

It reports dual channel mode in POST though and in all of my scans.

im no expert by any means, but the way dual channel works i dont think three sticks is capable of performing in dc mode.the specific ram can be capable of running in dc mode but unless you have it matched with another stick.......

I experienced a large rise in performance after I upgraded to 1GB, however one stick of my new RAM has been bad for at least 1 RMA cycle, I have yet to go through another.. although this time I am making a very small mark on the sticker on the RAM stick, just to make sure I don't get the same one back.

yea I hate it when they just send you the same one back and expect you to shut up. I suppose that might be their way of saying "You're an idiot user and will probably just buy a whole new computer rather than try to fix this"
