Failing to boot into windows, is it a psu problem?

Hi,

I’ve recently upgraded my pc after my old Athlon 2500XP died. I had a tight budget so decided to buy parts on ebay, I ordered a socket 754 athlon 3400+ and msi K8T NFIS2R. When the processor arrived I noticed it wouldn’t seat correctly in the motherboard, and after closer inspection I noticed two pins were slightly bent so I used a credit card to re align them and it fitted snug.

Now I’ve got the pc up and running but I initially started encountering blank screen freezes in high graphical intensive games. Over time this has gotten worse and I was encountering weird problems like explorer.exe was crashing within windows and now the pc wont even boot into windows restarting whilst loading.

I must stress I don’t believe it is overheating the processor is running at 45-49 Celsius and the system at 45.

I have a feeling this is a power supply issue rather than graphics/memory/heat /damaged processor (due to bent pins) issues, and even explorer.exe was crashing within windows. The psu is a cheapo Winpower 400W that came with my case, I don’t want to shell out more cash to find that the power supply is not the problem.

So could anyone please give me their thoughts as to what is wrong with my pc and if the problems experienced indicate that it is indeed a power supply issue

you need a good PSU for AMD64.

I have an old A1 AMD approved 400W and had crashes, locks, and reboots.
I bought a new rosewill 450W from newegg wih alot better rails for like $30
and all was well.

Run a memory tester like docmemory or memtest86 before you buy to
make sure thats not the couse. other wise it's likely the PSU

Thanks for the reply, I dont think I could actually run memtest in its current state without it restarting :S The ram worked perfect in the prior setup so it should be fine (2x's kingston pc3200 512).

Any recommendations as to what power supply I should get? Ive seen a Q-tec 650W Triple Fan reasonibly priced, but ive heard bad things about Q-tecs about false ratings or something :S
