Pagefile Optimizations?
Well, Monday I will be receiving my new 1 GB of memory. Which will make my system specs as:
AMD 64-bit 3000+ 754 Processor 1.5 GB of PC3200 RAM 7200 RPM 200 GB / 7200 RPM 60 GB ATi 9800 Pro 256 MB Retail (all stock) I read some pagefile optimization guides, and all their calculations seem to say the more memory then the more pagefile. I personally think this would hurt performance definitely, since HDD memory isnt near as fast as DDR memory obviously. I also keep my pagefile on the seperate 60 GB hard drive to help a little bit. I currently have 768 MB of PC2700 memory (256 at 2700 and a 512 stick being uncerclocked) but when I grab my new 1 GB of PC3200 it will match with my 512 and should give me a real good performance increase. I am a heavy gamer so I was curious what would be good to make my pagefile based on the new system specs. As a smaller pagefile would force Windows to use my real system memory which would rape my pagefile, but then too low of a pagefile would make Windows depend on my real memory too much and then in turn hurt system performance. Wondering if anyone had any tips. Thank you -h4x0r- Thanks for moving, there are so many forums on DH I didnt see one at first to match my query. Last edited by -h4x0r-; Jun 19, 2005 at 02:18 PM. |

With 1.5GB of RAM for gaming the pagefile will only be used very little. The pagefile is not used more if it is set to a larger value since the system uses RAM first. A small amount of pagefile will always be used by Windows though, wich makes it unnecessary to try to turn it off. Getting more RAM is the only smart thing to do and you have just done that.

Exactly, so my pagefile will need to be smaller, but not too small as Windows will still use it for soemthing. However at the moment I only have 1 GB of RAM as I am having RAM issues, compatibility I suppose, and im already about to write up another thread on support for this as it seems abnormal what is going on. Thanks for the help so far
