exclamation Connection Problems... Modem or ISP?

Ive had this problem for about 2 months now. On an average of 10-15 times a day i will lose my internet connection ( 'a network cable is unplugged' message will appear in windows) And it will come back on about 60 seconds later.

It has been happening more and more latley. I called the ISP and they said its either the modem or my phone line because if the line is longer that 3m this can happen. I was like bull shit, it has nothing to do with how long the phone line is...! But does it? They are trying to put all the blame on me, im pretty sure my modem is fine. When i lose my connection the modem lights are on but just not flashing.

Any ideas what is wrong. im thinking of changing my ISP to see if there is any improvment...

Im on 512/128 dsl

if you get the message "a network cable is unplugged" then i would have to say that something on the hardware side is to blame. Did you make the CAT5 cable yourself, or was it already pre-made? have you already checked to see that everything is plugged in snugly? just some questions to ask. i'm sure you've already checked all these yourself

Whats a cat5 cable. Im just using a normal phone line though a splitter, Its running through my house its about 15 metres long. Than goes into the back of my modem which is connected via USB and also to my Router for wireless for my laptop.

Everything is plugges in snug and its even taped so it doesnt come apart...

So you are saying its most likely my modem then??

could be your personal firewall settings or incorrectly setting within the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) registry keys if you've modified them (either by yorself or through a software program.)

suggestions... uninstall the personal firewall software if you use one. after rebooted uninstall the modem driver.
and reset the TCP/IP stack to restore it to its state that existed when the OS was first installed by typing at a Command Prompt a command line like this...
" netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt ". the reset command rewrites pertinent registry keys that are used by the TCP/IP stack to reach the same result as the removal and the reinstallation of the protocol.
and then reconfigure your LAN and its adapter properties up again if you use one, then reinstall the modem driver, PPPoE for using in connecting to internet, and then the personal firewall (still using the program default settings). then see what happens.

Well i found the problem.

My router. I unplugged it and unbriged the modem. And presto. No disconnections in 3 hrs!

Oh and guess what brand the router is... Nne other than the SHIT D-LINK...

Threw it onto the pile of dead dlink products i have in my closet, 3 modems and 1 router...

you could call the ISP supports back tell them to add what you've found out about the problem to their answering machine. it will then have sometings more to say other than the splitter or the phone lines solutions. good find at the troubleshooting btw.

Just in the last two days, I had a big problem getting our network connected through a D-Link Router (704) that I've had for a few years now. We just got Comcast Cable connection yesterday and the frustration with this router drove me to Micro Center where I picked up a LinkSys Broadband Router for $39 plus tax. When I got back home, I was on the Internet in about 5 minutes!! No kidding! It only took 5 minutes from the time I popped the CD setup disk in before I had the router settings established. It was that easy!

BTW, on my 'game' computer, I'm getting a solid 6 Mbps download. On the 'system' computer that's registered with Comcast, it's getting over 8 Mbps download.

I suggest using PCPITSTOP for some very good analysis of your whole system. www.pcpitstop.com Been using it for years now since my previous DSL install.

ADDITIONALLY, PCPITSTOP gives a Yellow warning flag on ATi's RealPlayer and the Wild Tangent games. They come with a 'call home' spyware. So, be warned and take your precautions.

Crappy connection problems here also.
Linksys wireless router and a Gigabyte network card, short lag spikes that disconnected. BF2 was a bugger to play like that.

Installed a Linksys Network adapter, doesnt disconnect like the other, but its on Low strength all the time. Firmware is all up to date.
I'll have to get my cables down here somehow.

Cable allows you to be many many miles further out beyond the reach of even
the best DSL.For DSL you have to be with in 3 miles of the phone cables main
box. Phone lines can be old, subject to interference and so forth... Far as your
phone company is conserded they don't care! Every line, ever repeater, between
your ISP and you modem effects the quailty of you service. Cable only cost a tad
more useally but also ofter more speed for the price. DSL is more subject to slowdowns
and conjestion aslo. Cable is alot better then DSL (useally) also DSL often has useage
limits wer cable is unlimited use download all month if you-ump to.

Not sure how it is where you live but I pay $34.99 for 4MBps Cable no contracts
14.99 and 24.99 for DSL, one year contract, ans like $149 kit required, rebates invovled

Lookin at a minimum $80 a month, and even then i dont think you could get a decent plan on cable...

Ouch! that sucks! In that case your pretty well stuck....

What I'd suggest is to make sure you've got those specail DSL filters
on all your places phones.

Check your wireing make sure it the good stuff soild core not braded. use one of the shelded DSL cables to run from you modem to the wall jack...

.... thats about all you can do....your pretty well powerless.........

WildTangent has had spyware components in it for some time, but I guess people love to play their games. I think it also gets thrown on your system by AOL.. The RealPlayer is probably Realsched.exe, which periodically checks for updates.

Neon is right, by the way about the connection thing. You should either use USB OR ethernet, not both. I suspect that you have been having issues with your router longer than you think.
