Install a Seagate SATA HDD

I already know that I have to make a FD and hit F6 to install a driver, but can somebody please tell me where I can go and download the file that I need for a Seagate Barracuda 200G.

I want to make the drive the sole, primary drive. I already tried that seagate 'disc help' dos utility, or whatever they call it. Went through all that, booted from FDD, installed it etc, it told me to reboot and install windows as normal, then windows told me that there was no drive to install to.

Please help!

(and yeah, I was a naughty boy and updated my sig before I installed the hdd)

You might have the sata driver on your motherboard installation cd or can find it on the Gigabyte website ... there is no driver supplied by Seagate .

edit : there is the link you want

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Motherboa...Rev%202.x).htm

Yeah, I found that too.
Question is, what exactly do I use on the floppy??
To me it reads like I put the first download on a floppy to keep windows happy.
Other than that, I'd need about 12 damn discs to hold the 16mb's the driver consists of. I struggled to turn up one disc in the house, let alone 12 odd.

Do I need to put all 16mb's of the driver onto floppy discs to get my drive working???

Follow those steps ...

5.3 Pre-Installation Using the F6 Method
Note:
The Steps 1 and 2 can be skipped if you use the F6 Floppy
disk utility provided by Intel. This utility can also be
downloaded from the following website. These methods
are applicable to systems configured for RAID or
AHCI mode.
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...ProductID=1809
1. Extract all driver files from the installation package.
See Section 7.2 for instructions on extracting the
files.
2. Create a floppy containing the following files in the root directory:
iaAhci.inf, iaAhci.cat,
iaStor.inf, iaStor.cat,
iaStor.sys, and
TxtSetup.oem.
3. At the beginning of the operating system installation, press F6
to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.
4. When prompted, select 'S' to Specify Additional Device.
5. When prompted, insert the floppy disk you created in
step 2 and press Enter.
6. At this point you should be presented with a selection
for one of the following depending on your hardware
version and configuration:

- Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
- Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
- Intel(R) 82801FR SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH6R)
- Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH6R)
- Intel(R) 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH6M)
- Intel(R) 82801ER SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH5R)
- Intel(R) 6300ESB SATA RAID Controller
7. Highlight the selection that is appropriate for the
hardware in your system and press Enter.
8. Press Enter again to continue. Leave the floppy disk in
the system until the next reboot as the software will
need to be copied from the floppy disk again when setup
is copying files.

I'm not exactly sure about that motherboard, but you shouldn't need to install a driver for the SATA unless you are going to be using it in a RAID setup. You should just be able to install XP onto that drive. If you are looking to clone the old drive to the new one, do so, and then set the new drive as the bootable one, or remove the old one. It should work right away. The only thing you might have to do is reinstall the Intel Chipset driver.

One other thing: depending on the bios it may or may not retain the old drive as the first drive to boot to. In either case double check the bootup sequence in the bios, and change it to the drive you want the system to boot to first.

Thanks for the help guys.

Once I'd followed ReDGuiTaR's step-by-step (physically finding each individual file and putting on the disc) it worked straight off.

The disc wizzard from seagate was a big fat waste of time by the way. It tells you the drive is ready to go and prompts you to try and install your OS, but windows still needs that disc that I had to make up.

So anywho, all sorted now.

One quick question, can I slave an ide drive (with the sata running as primary boot) and if so, anything in particular that I have to do???

Nice to ear that !

For the ide disk you dont need to " slave it " as it will be alone on the ide port and you have nothing more to do than to plug it in .

Glad to see you got it working.

Kinda strange that you had to install the driver for it, especially for an Intel ICH. Usually Windows will install just fine without it unless you install drives in a RAID setup. Hmm... Oh well.

you don't have to press F6 for installing the extra driver.
since you press F6 the setup program have to request for the drivers disk.
the drivers was forced to be installed but i don't think the system is actually use it, since it does not configured for RAID mode.

I tried to install it just like I would if I plugged a new ide drive in, didn't hit f6, but windows told me there was no hard drive to install to.
Once I'd put drivers on it worked normally.

Ok. let's see...

reboot and enter your BIOS setup during POST and go to the On-Chip SATA item under the 'Integrated Peripherals' menu,
below that about 2-4 lines you would see a menu or an option called 'SATA RAID Function'

have you tried setting this option to "Disabled" before installing the Windows ?

Yeah, just checked, it was enabled while I installed windows. At least now I know for next time.

Now that I'm up and running, what's the best way to 'unlock' (for want of a better expression) the rest of the space on my drive???
It's showing 127GB at the mo.

Do I need a BIOS upgrade or is there a disc utility that I could use?
