When Network HUBs Go Bad

We've had one computer, completely isolated by location, that has failed to connect to our network ever since we got Comcast Cable again a week ago.

It wasn't completely critical for it to be connected as the kids were at a convention. However, with them back home now, this one was now critical to be connected.

I spent some time re-running cables, checking connections -- all without success.

Finally, I just decided to disconnect that one from the upstairs Uplink HUB and use a CAT5 extension connector. VOILA! We had connection again.

So, the culprit in this was the HUB itself.

Since there aren't any other computers connecting from that area, we'll leave it be for now.

How many others have had HUBs to go bad like this? Sounds like it might have been hit by lightning or some kind of other surge.

More times than I care to remember. Crappy parts, and crappy PSU (overall power quality control/craftsmanship) have been at the top of my list for reasons with power surges right behind them. Not to mention Lynksys being at the top of my list for routers/switches to never buy again.
