XP2100 Palamino running hot....but not that hot?
I'm using easy tune 4 (included with my GA-7AVX board) and it says that my XP2100 Palamino is running at 55C at idle....And that is with a volcano 9 running at 4100rpm. And the ambient temperature is in the middle 60F degrees. Why the hell would the processor run so damn hot? With artic silver, good fan and heatsink, and not overclocked...... WTF!?!?!?
Edits: I touch the heatsink and it is not even as hot as my old 1.33ghz Thunderbird overclocked to 1.46ghz. Could my mobo be giving me some BS temps?

That is a little strange I have the same processor and I have a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ and the processor is usually about 42-44C.

But is your processor the Palamino core?

My Palamino XP2100 runs at 51c idling(at least that is what it's showing while browsing and playing music on MusicMatch). I'm just using the original AMD heatsink on it right now, but I plan to get a Volcano 7+ real soon myself. I've seen it go as high as 56.5c after some gaming.
So, what's the "danger temp" for this CPU anyway? |

The danger temp is around 65 C if I recall correctly, but in reality the danger temp is going to be beyond whatever temperature locks your computer up, so I would say that you are in the clear so long as you tell your mobo to kill the power at 65 or 70 C automatically and you shut down when things get above 60ish...

I know your gonna hate me but.:
I have a palomino myself (2100+) and im cooling it with a CAk4 t88 and since i ran out of AS3 i used some high performance thermal grease that came with my GlobalWin cooler. I have my core volts pumped up to at least 1.9v most of the time and right now im at 2v. Well i hate to tell ya but my CPU temp is below ..are you sitting down??................45 degrees C idle. But if i use CPUCool i get down to 40 !!!! The only time i actually saw 51 when i had a shitty cooler and ran alot of benches. Or when i did a 10 round burn-in with sandra @ 148 fsb 2volt. |

DriveEuro, I have a 1600+ AGOIA 4 .... its default is 1.7vcore 10.5X133 for a total of 1400MHz ... Now here is the kicker. I now have it running at 10.5X175 @ 1.85 vcore... Using a Thermalright SK6 with a Delta ... I am getting a temp under full load 44*C ... You must have something installed incorrectly.

Drive,
I would recommend you uninstall your processor and reinstall it being very careful in applying the paste. It sounds like to me you might have air pockets or something. |

Good lord I hope not.
Have you downloaded the lastest bios for your motherboard? I would look into that and try Motherboard monitor. |

You're right, latest bios fixes cpu probe. Motherboard monitor reads 59 C. David did tell me I may have to upgrade my heatsink with the new cpu. Any recommendations?

How much you willing to spend. UK OC has the Alpha which is a great heatsink for the money if your willing to spend that much.

I'm running the Athlon XP 2100 Palamino. At first my temperatures were way to high. Stressing the rig i was at 75C.
I installed three extras fans, now a total of 5 and some artic silver paste. That brought down the temperatures, but just idling away like now, my temperatures are always like these: ![]() The machine runs just fine at these temps, although they tend to rise if i stress the machine some, but no where near 75 C as before.

i also have the palamino 2100. at idle i am 54-55 degrees, when i stress it (like 2 hrs straight of gaming) it jumps to 59-60 degrees. that is with no gel and 1 fan in the case and a slot fan. you definitely should be running cooler than me.

Highwayman, get the latest beta BIOS for the A7V333, 1016, ASUS finally fixed the temperature readings.
Here are my readings (XP2000+ and Volcano7) : Those are idle readings. On full the case goes up by 3C, and the CPU goes to 49C maximum at full capacity. Btw guys, is there a way to make the Volcano 7 and Thermaltake Smartfans to rotate faster? (they have that speed adjusting by temperautre thing) |

My overclocked 2000+ is about 62C idle (69 under load) on the diode but only reads at 41C on the thermistor which is the same as my 1Ghz tbird was. For the thermistor temp getting above 60 is too high but the internal diode can go into the 70s without any damage although it might not be 100% stable ![]() I've seen a tbird at 88C (sustained) on the thermistor and survive so I would think that the death point for an internal diode is over 100C. Not that id garuntee your cpu if you ran it at that temp

I am running an AGKGA K (first stepping) Palomino at 1764mhz at 1.7 volts, with the temperature holding at 14C above ambient (ambient here varies from 10-30, depending on weather and time of day, with major overclocking being at night when its ~10 )

So I refitted the heatsink and only got a 1-2C better temp....I dunno...I can't live with this hot of a processor......It's kinda annoying. I have a 2200T-bred laying around that I was gonna sell.....I might try that out.

My 2100+ ain't that hot, I have an AX-7 and a 50 cfm varible fan (it's a LED fan with a rheostat). I have a wpcredit tweak that enabled STGNT, that lowers the CPU temp quite a lot in my case on my KX7-333, maybe it'll work for u.

where did you get that tweak? does that do the same thing that CPUCool does?

Might be, those programs use HALT enable, the tweak I have uses STGNT or something, it's register 92, bit 1 I think, I'll get more info 2morrow on this stuff.

Wanna hear something wierd? The other day my XP2100 palamino was idling at 55c. Today I registered WinXP, now it's idling at 51.5c.
Mind-bogging ain't it? I don't think that just registering my WinXP really caused the temp to drop like that. Maybe the system has just settled into itself?Right now I'm just using the stock AMD heatsink, but I'm definitely going to get a ThermalTake Volcano 7+. I wonder what it will do then......maybe I'll go get it tomorrow. ![]() I'm running the CPU at the default voltage settings, I don't overclock anything. Wouldn't it actually hurt the CPU to run it at higher voltages or would I get some advantage out of that? If there is an advantage, what is it and what should I set the voltage to?
