Best performance?
Which would provide the best proformance?
P4 2.4B w/ 512Mb (16bit) PC800 RD-RAM AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (333FSB) w/ 512Mb PC3200 DDR-RAM on Dual channel mobo P4 2.4B w/ 512Mb PC3200 DDR-RAM on Dual channel mobo Last edited by Dom; Jan 2, 2003 at 12:47 AM. |

XP2600.......are you having a brain far? No offense..XP2600 is equivalent to a pentium 2.6 the ram on the dual channel board would be SOOOOOOOO amazing. Come on, also the Athlon is cheaper...(not much, but it is worth it in the long run).... The price of RAMBUS ram is crazy too, DDR is cheap.

While I agree that the Athlon 2.6 would be better performer, I disagree that prices of RDRAM is crazy. It's only marginally higher than its equivalent DDR modules.

Dom already has RDRAM
I think the P4+DualDDR setup may have a slight edge, but overall, they'd all be about the same

But put dual channel DDR against RAMBUS.....wouldn't the dual channel 333 work at something like 666mhz?

if the P4 was running on a springdale with dual channel DDR400 it would kick the athlons ass. BUT, it won't be, so the athlon.
and yes, rambus is dual channel |

2600 winz, easily, 333 FSB + DCDDR and it's rated vs a 2.6 ghz intel so it wins

First, the bandwidth from RAM to Northbridge: 1. (16bit) PC800 RD-RAM: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3200 MB/s 2. PC3200 DDR-RAM on Dual channel mobo: . . . 6400 MB/s 3. PC3200 DDR-RAM on Dual channel mobo: . . . 6400 MB/s Now, the bandwidth from CPU to Northbridge: 1. P4 2.4B: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4200 MB/s 2. AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (333FSB): . . . 2700 MB/s 3. P4 2.4B: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4200 MB/s The max bandwidth is always limited to the lower number of the RAM or CPU So, the final max bandwidth of each setup: 1. P4 2.4B w/ 512Mb (16bit) PC800 RD-RAM: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3200 MB/s 2. AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (333FSB) w/ 512Mb PC3200 DDR-RAM on Dual channel mobo: . . . 2700 MB/s 3. P4 2.4B w/ 512Mb PC3200 DDR-RAM on Dual channel mobo: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4200 MB/s The Athlon's 333MHz FSB is what holds it back. Intel's 533MHz takes better advantage of the Dual Channel DDR. Now as for the CPU's themselves, well just because AMD named that CPU "2600" doesn't mean that it is the same as a 2600MHz Pentium 4. In some areas, it is better, in others, it is worse. Since it is up against a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 in this case, the Athlon would probably usually be on top. But most of the time probably by only a couple percent! Combine that with Intel's better memory bandwidth, and the field becomes pretty even. But definitely, none of them wins "easily," and Dual Channel DDR doesn't do too much for the Athlon at this point. ![]() I'll stick with my original guess of P4+DualDDR being slightly better overall.

Thanks that was good
![]() Congrats, the first person to ever call me a fanboy I'm laughing so hard cuz I can't find what made you say that Was it the "field becomes pretty even?" Or the part where I state my guess: a conspicuously italicised "slightly better." ![]() As for xp2600 reviews, you want me to read some? Yes, sir! Right as soon as you provide me with a link comparing Athlons to P4 with Dual-DDR (the matter at hand here, if ya noticed ) Don't worry, I wont hold my breath . . . ![]() Seriously, I've only read a couple, but I don't think anything I said was too far off.

xfg
Sorry Vamp, only reviews showcasing an nForce2 and +2800 against a 2.8 P4 on a i845 chipset...which is totally fair
![]() I would actually go for the 2.4 NOT because it's faster than the 2600...but because I could overclock it to 2.8 with no worries whatsoever...I like overclocked thingies |

overclocking P4's nice as long as you don't get dreaded sudden death syndrome! then it becomes expensive overclock lol
