The Opteron's 1 series use a San Diego core used in A64 3700+ and 4000+ . The difference between Those and Venice cores (3000+ - 3800+ ) is they have twice the cache.

Are you thinking about an opteron 146 socket 939? If supported by your motherboard, it would make a very good cpu, as all it is, is a declocked 3700+, and it isn't any more than a 3000+.

No_Style is on a distinguished road

Also, Opterons have HTT links which allow direct/efficient connections with other CPUs for multi-cpu setups. Hardcore multi-tasker should get 2 x dual core Opterons for 4 cores of multi-tasking goodness.

Yea, operton is good for servers. A64 is good for everything else besides servers.

I'd take a opteron 146 over and A64 cpu up to 3700+.

Well, I got my Opteron 144 (9x200) 1.8 GHz. It currently runs at (267x9) 2.4 GHz @ 1.4V.

Will try more...

I didn't even revert to biso defaults. I just lowered the voltage, and the CPU was recognized by the mainboard. It runs 2 degrees celsius hotter, but it runs smooth

My two buddies and I bought three of them together. Even their serial numbers are consecutive. My buddy has his at 2.7 GHz @ 1.55V. I have stability problems with anything higher than 2.5 GHz, probably because of my cheap, shitty memory.

still higher than 3700+ san diego clocks at a much cheaper price.

imo... enless your interested in overclocking the 939 variant of the opteron, it's really quite pointless as you can't take advantage of what it was built for. Until you slap it in a 940 chipset with at least another cpu socket... and then get them dual core... that's when you'll see what the opterons server/multitasking abilities start to really show up. Like no Style mentioned.

IMO, better have a fat wallet.... running a 940 setup isn't cheap at all specially diving into an dual core cpu set. however, i doubt you'll run out of preformance for SEVERAL years

If you want a single core AMD CPU, Opteron's are without a doubt the best price/performance ratio.

I don't think they have Socket 939 variants of it. I mean the 1 series opterons.

Exactly. Single core Opteron for socket 939 is the way to go! With my crappy memory My baby rocks stable at the whopping 2.7 GHz. I have to get my hands on a good stepping Opteron 146. Oh, my results can be viewed here.

crappy memory @ 300HTT??!! Or are you running a divider, if not why not try one?

2.7GHz isn't anything to complain about either, definately for the price of the cpu.

Of course I am running a divider ( 300 x 7/10 = 210 MHz). Unfortunately I got the cheapest memory available on the market. Thankfuly I can run them at least at 1T and a bit tighter timings 2.5-3-3-7 (default 2.5-3-3-8).

I thought of replacing them for some good modules, but then again I rather buy another 2 x 512 of the same crappy memory and have 2 gigs.

Donator
The dual core Opterons run on lower voltage than the X2's(1.30-1.35v for Opteron and 1.35-1.4v for X2). Same probably goes for the single core cpu's and is probably why they are better OC'ers.
