How old is the drive? I know that my wife can burn through a drive in about a year as she is constantly burning CD's for her dance students. If you do a lot of CD creation, it may be that you just need a new drive.

I know it seems like the cheaters way out, but sometimes you need to weigh the cost of a drive versus how much your time is worth to you to troubleshoot a $30-$50 component.

If you have different disks available, try them. Make sure your cdrw is set to ultra dma mode as well (in device manager > ide controllers > advanced tab in properties) . Sometimes these drives get stuck in pio mode, at which you can't burn any faster than 2-4x...

Personally I don't do just straight CD RW drives anymore in anything I build. The price difference is down to about 10 bucks so it makes sense to have the added functionality.

My new favorite DVD Burner is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135043. They're super quiet.

My local retailers (MicroCenter, Fry's, and a few others) have DVD Burners for $39.99 plus tax. Some are Sony brand and some are Samsung, if that matters.

Here's a link: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...duct_id=216074

ahhh crap, i snagged a NEW HDD- a 7200rpm, SEAGATE barracuda right 80GB ulta ata- etc etc....now i hooked it up to my cpu, no worries. but the second i started my cpu, with WINXP in the drive...it kept on giving me a message- ATAPI BOOT CD: INVALID SYSTEM DISK INSERT SYSTEM DISK; - that BS- so i tried other windows xp cds, i had my gf bring hers, yeah that ddidnt work either- so i though ok, mabye it is the burner- prob messed up, so i placed in a NEW (didnt buy, just borrowed from other cpu) CD-rom a 44x atapi thing- it runs and everything BUT- it gives me the SAME error...i cannot get windows xp setup going...i have set the CD as boot 1, HDd-1 as boot and floppy is 3

so can it be the cds, or is the HD? oh and i got the hd set up as master, cd as secondary ide master- so it cant be that.

so now im going to browse these discs, to make sure the cd rom is fine, as well the cd's. now im using my old 20GB HD- thanks again advance! game oN!
