component apart from the motherboard. I've tried everything that

you guys can come up with and the bastard still wont

beep for me I've got a headache now so I'm

giving up. I think the motherboard is fecked so I'm gonna take it

back first thing tomorrow and get them to check it out.

Thanks again for all your help/advice guys.

He's not sure. Thinks it maybe something to do with CMOS. Rest assured when he's fully operational he'll fill ya in!

Glad to hear that he got it running. I am quite surprised no one suggested trying a PCI video card to check the AGP port.

Thumbs Up!

Phew !!!! I'm back at last lol What a day

Before I try and explain what it was I just want to thank you

guys again for your concern and help In trying to get my problem

sorted, the saying that two heads are better than one was

certainly true on this occasion.

A special thanks must go to you Dig, I know we haven't always

seen eye on here but I feel that all that is a long way behind

us now

Rite, here goes, I was just about ready to give up for the tenth

time when I thought I would try resetting the CMOS 'again'. I

found another method in one of the links you posted. I didn't

expect it to work cos I had tried so many times before. What a

relief when I heard that likkle beep

I've got XP back on and I'm in the process of swapping all my stuff

over from my old hard drive and installing all my programs again.

I haven't tried any games yet but I already love the blistering

speed of this new set-up

Thanks once again guys. Driverheaven rules !!

EDITED BITS: I forgot to mention, he had the same problem with the same board and also includes the procedure on how to clear the CMOS in that link. I'll betcha a dollar that fixes it.
Ps. I guess I owe you a dollar Dig

Smilie Good job.

I'm glad to hear about you getting it fixed, I know how aggravating a busted box can be. It's an awful kind of empty/hollow/pukey feeling for me when I can't get a box to boot, I never ever hold grudges during crunch times.

I'm always gonna enjoy meself poking fun at everyone, but when someone's got a problem I'm always gonna try and help. I just remember me own first few times when I hosed my box and was up with it for 16 hours straight trying to get her back up.

Funny story actually, I spent the whole night figuring out what a boot-disk was and how to handwrite one for me particular rig....without any internet (this was '94...on a Packard Bell ). My wife woke up in shock to see me still up and plugging away at the PC. When I tried to explain what I was doing to her, (and it took about a half a pot of coffee. It wasn't that she was slow with PCs...I just wasn't very good with windows 3.1 so didn't know what I was talking about.), she looked at me and said; "John, why didn't you just use the emergency boot-up disk thingy that came in that envelope with the computer?".

I actually dropped me coffee cup when what she said kicked in and I just sort of heard meself say, "What 'emergency boot-up disk thingy'?"

It turns out PB had included a boot-disk, it's just that since me wife put the computer together while I was at work (Man, this WAS a while ago!) she had gotten the envelope with all the back-up CDs & floppy and put it in a safe place....without ever once mentioning it to me.

She had a good laugh over the rest of her coffee, I popped the floppy in and watched in amazement as the PC re-built itself in front of me eyes and felt REALLY dumb.

Sorry, just flashing back. I hate to see anyone else going thru that kind of stuff, it's why I like helping peeps on the boards. It's me way of trying to pay back all the people who've helped me out over so many years.

Gotta run, all this reminiscing is just too close to actual thinking for full relaxation mode. I hope you have a lot of fun with the rest of the system set-up, and I hope things go smoothly. If they don't, don't panic. It's just another hurdle on the path to the ultimate PC.

I'll have to come back to this thread if I have any problems. So an advanced "Thank You" is in order I think.
