Simple Question

Hey guys I've never installed a MOBO before and I'm wondering if I need to reinstall any drivers like vid card or sound card, etc after the new MOBO is in place? I'm thinkin' no, but I figured I'd ask those of you who know more than I.

You have to install the latest MoBo driver first then the video driver, sound driver and everythingelse.

Ahh, so lets see...I'm keeping my old HD, but this makes no difference even though the drivers for all the components are on there?

if you replace a major thing like a motherboard, the best thing to do is a fresh install of windows

so backup your files and find your windows disc

Crappy...is it absolutely necessary that I reinstall Windows??

I've been reading and it sounds like I may have to go out and buy WIndows XP becasue I don't actually have the cd. When I bought my packaged PC a disk came with it (a recovery disk) and somewhere on there is Windows. Will I have to go buy WIndows when I install my new MOBO and processor??

it seems to me that you probably want to have a simple answer to that question as well. so simple answer is no. it also seems that you wanted to make sure on other things. but, do you by any chance also want to make sure that you won't have problem with the existing Windows after you installed all of the new hardweres, or have already tried to isolate this item from the other problems that you might have after your hardwere upgrade are done?

w/winXP, you are allowed to make hardware changes to basically anything but the MoBo and not needing to reinstalling windows. windows basically becomes corrupted as soon as you change out that MoBo. It's like having a brain transplant.....it's not going to happen, and you still live through the ordeal

also, you mentioned that you have "recovery" discs. just some FYI, chances of those discs working, are slim to nil. you gotta have a full version of windows if you want it to work properly. the reason why i say this, is because.....

1. the recover disc(s) that came w/your computer, are intended for all the original hardware that came w/your pre-built machine
2. recovery discs usually (on newer machines at least) have a 2nd small partition for additional files regarding the recovery process
3. recovery discs have drivers for only the hardware that comes included in the package (thought this wouldn't matter anyways because you gotta install a fresh set of drivers anyways)
4. recovery discs are usually full of unwanted applications

that's about all i can think of as to why not to use the recovery discs.

Nope.

A fresh install is always nice anyway, ensures you're getting the most of out of your new hardware.

have you ever went up to a car that looked just like yours (same make/model) and went to open the car and the key worked? hasn't happened to me as i've keyless entry, but it does seem interesting

Ok, Ok...got it guys. It's just that I'd rather not have to hassle with reinstallion and backing up everything if I didn't have to. But what you say makes perfect sense and I will do a fresh install and I guess that means I'll have to spend over a $100 canadian on freakin' Windows...bastards - why don't they just inlcude a 'real' Windows CD with the PCs?? Money hungry bastards. But as always I appreciate your knowledge

Oh, and nice car analogy you guys...if this were the days of Socrates you'd guys be set...lol

Back before I had a copy of XP, I used to have to set up XP on my mom's machine (which came w/ a disc like yours) and then take the HDD and put it in mine. Her's was an old nforce220/440, mine was a Asus A8V8X-X. Different chipsets, different drivers, but it actually worked.

Since then, I've only see it work when switching to a very similar model of mobo. At work we have 10 MSI Km4am's, and one MSI Km4m, I can take the same HDD and use it for all of the boards.
