HDD Temps???

What's a general kinda safe temp for a hdd??

My 200G sata barracuda is getting up to 40°c+ after a couple hours use.

I know it's not a huge temperature, but I figure best to ask now and sound like a noob than risk decreasing the life span of my drive.

Keeping below 50C during intense use like defragmenting would be a safe general rule, while the thermal specs vary some between different products.

no cooler, no.
I didn't think I'd need one with the case that I have (2x 120mm case fans).

your hdd is practically the same as mine isn't it.
all I was doing with my pc when I noticed the hdd temp was surfing.

I'l have to defrag and watch what the temps do.

which side is 'in front'?

I have one behind, shown as pink, the hdd is orange.

that pink fan draws front to back.

talking about hard disk drive's temperature...
i have a set of computer that sits on movable table, and this computer will be placed outside the building almost everyday for years now.
about 3-4 months ago this computer was Intel P4/1.6 with 3x IBM 60 GB. hard disk drives on it,
for most of the time that the computer is running the disk drives will be at 40 - 50 °C and it will be running like this for 7-8 hours/day. the temperature will always be like this. i believe the 3 IBM drives are still in good condition after i've been doing that to them for more than 3 yesrs.

the mobile computer has now been upgraded to Intel P4 630 and 2x Maxtors SATA 160 GB, and a Seagate 80 GB. SATA II.
both the CPU and disk drives are running at higher temperature than before as everyone who uses these new Pentium 4 CPUs (i mean all socket 775 CPUs) should notice it.
the outside temperature is the same, but the hardware's temperature are higher. and the last time that i cheked it after a few days of the test running it was always close to 50 °C and it will be like this for the whole day and around 5 days/week.
