Comp Refuses To 'Shut Down'
My comp will only turn off if I hit the button on the front, if I tell windows to power down it just restarts.
started doing this a while back, and since it started I've put in brand new HDD, GF card and memory, and fresh installed windows about a dozen times. Still won't shut off from windows. Any ideas?? |

Do you have wake on LAN enabled? If so then it may be that every time network traffic hits it it would start the machine.
Test this by disconnecting your network cable and shutting it down. If it shuts down, then plug the cable back in. If it starts back up that would be the issue. Should be a setting in your BIOS to disable it.

try setting or changing the registry String Value (REG_SZ) name "PowerdownAfterShutdown" to 1.
if this value does not already exist create a new one. and see if this helps. open the Registry Editor (Run regedit) and go to the following registry subkey: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. in right pane look for value name PowerdownAfterShutdown, and then edit its value data. backup your registry before making the changes. |

PangingJr, I very nearly love you!
Fantastic, changed the string value in regedit and it worked a treat! Only thing now is, I want to know why? My other 3 comps have the value set to 0, and they all shut down fine. So why did I have to set mine to 1 to get it to work properly? |

read the section 'Powerdown issues' on this article "Windows XP Shutdown & Restart Troubleshooting"
Quote:
and the registry setting is like a workaround to the problem. this workaround is not supported on all computers. some beta version or tweaked version of BIOS file for some motherborad can also cause this problem, and BIOS updates or reflash with an older version will fix it. Microsoft gives a warning about changing the registry value on Windows 2000 that the changes can cause serious, unexpected results. i've recommended to use this value settings to countless numbers of Windows XP systems, most of them are using old hardwares like the Slot 1 and Socket 370 borads. |

it's doing it again.
all I've done recently is re-install a wireless pci card. I haven't added anything else, software or hardware. I tried swapping the string value previously mentioned between 1 and 0 with no change. it's not been connected to the internet recently, not been used much at all really. wake on LAN is still disabled. ![]()

check the above article (post #6) on the section reboot instead of shutdown again. there are number of causes for this problem (reboot on shutdown) and are also a number of answers there.
