PCI PATA Controller Card Help

Does anyone know of any controller cards that support PATA 400GB drives yet? We ordered a couple for a work server I was putting together, but unfortunately the motherboard is not new enough to support such drives. Thanks!

i believe any PCI Ultra ATA/100 (and/or 133) IDE Host controller card that have large LBA (or often known as 48-bit LBA) supports should be able to handle the hard disk drives. besides the IDE host controller the operating system much support 48-bit LBA.

I've been doing a lot of research and all the ones that say they support larger than the 137 (48 bit LBA) do not support the new 400GB drives that are out. I was hoping someone floating around the forums would have a setup similar to what I'm trying to put together.

don't buy them yet til you're sure. you should be able to get a quick answer from the support people of the IDE host controller cards (like Adaptec or Promise).

long as the drive is say for example a maxtor to set up a drive that is
larger then your bios or firmware supports (wich is usealy the problem)
by applying a DDO. The drive setup utillity will do what is needed

If it another brand you have to look for a utillity on the web of the MFG website

But you'll then have to wait for the ddo to load before you boot to a floppy
or CD to install your OS...

Why didn't you ger SATA drives????
and just pick up a SATA controler and forget about it...

Software Translation Drivers (Dynamic Drive Overlays) comes with the following:

Compatibility Problems,
Reduced Drive Interoperability,
Problems Removing the Driver,
Floppy Disk Booting Complications,
Operating System Installation Issues

read more on this at http://www.storagereview.com/guide20...s/overDDO.html

and the drive overlay program should not be used to control hard disk drives on PC as server.
go for a hardware solution when you can.

thier alright and they work you just have to learn how to work with them.
virtaully nothing awful as seems to have been made it sound there. when
you read the sub information you see it not that bad. I would say unless
you spend your day booting to CDs and floppys or reformat daily or
something

booting to a CD or floopy you slimply wait untill the drive is acressed and
the screen pops for a moment that says up that says press "KEY" to boot
from a CD rom. press "KEY" to boot from a floppy.

No os installations issues least useing windows
( that mass magortity is, alternative oses I dunno)

there can be complatications when removeing a DDO but you don't do that
unless you putting it in a mother board or controller that supports it full size
or if you useing it as a secondary hard drive. I added and removed DDO's many
times and have only had one case where it was a problem andI belive it was
the utillity that messed up. I know data recovery programs can see right past it
as I lerned the hard way...

I don't think its that big of deal, least with my experince of useing
them over the years...they are an option, though your better off with the
bios of firmware or card with the updated firmware that supports the larger
drives. I'm not sure about a work enviroment I know it surely wouldn't work
with say "raid".

If you have only one drive and it the boot drive and you not chageing the
hardware configeration anytime soon. But now that I read what he wrote
again sounds like both drives are going in one machine in wich case DDO
is a bad idea...

What I'm thinking? Why didn't he buy SATA drives & SATA controler
since thier useally to handle the larger drives from the get go...

There out there you just have to look around. I bet some support it it just may not be listed
or you have to check the MFG website to see if the card has a firmware updates available

ohh!!! Here are contoller right here:

*Supports hard drives up to 400GB.

any host controller card (both PATA and SATA interfaces/drives) that can support 48-bit LBA is technically supposed to handle the maximum size of hard drives to 144,000 TB (around 144,000,000 GB).

if your server motherboard's PCI bus is/can only work on 3.3V., then another thing that you must check with the card maker is that the card is also support PCI bus 3.3V., not just 5V.

Adaptec and Promise are among leader of the PCI to any type of mass storage add-in cards, so check their products, reviews, and supports.
