Building problems
I built a rig out of some parts i had left over from my actual rig.
I am having problems with an IDE slot. The motherboard was considered some what 'dodgy' in my eyes as it wasn't treated well in it's previous home lol (so it may be as simple as motherboard issues). It reads the HDD fine when it starts up it trys to load windows 98 but has many issues, it was never my plan to leave the HDD as it was, i want to format it and install XP onto it. So i tried to boot from D:\ and it doesnt read another drive. I went into BIOS and in the components it shows IDE1 Master as the HDD and IDE2 Master as CD-Rom. Therefore it must be reading it to some extent - in the BIOS screen i can open and close the CDROM but at any other time i can not. I have tried putting my DVDRW drive onto the IDE slot, which didnt change anything. I also tried having HDD on IDE2 and CDROM on IDE1, in this scenario it just didn't boot up. Could it be the Mobo even though it detects it in BIOS? or is there something else it could be or i should try ? Thanks for any replies - anything would help i dont really want to be paying for a mobo. |

check the really obvious stuff first;
jumper settings on the cd / hdd ide cables all working properly etc if you want to wipe the hdd anyways you could always slave it to your other rig and format it there, then try it again see if it prompts for boot from cd cos the hdd is clean. |

Have you verified the CDROM work in another rig? And is the BIOC set to boot from CD before boting from HD?

when you say you try to boot from D:\ , are you sure that 'D' is the drive letter assigned to the cdrom drive??
between card readers and various slave drives / partitions, mine go all the way to K:\ |
