If he just bought it within Best Buy's 30 Day return policy, I say take it back. I think there is no reason for there to be dead pixels on any newly bought LCDs unless the customer abused the product.

Sorry, but any LCD, even a brand spanking new one, can have a dead pixel. It's not a matter of abuse, but just a hazard with dealing in LCD technology. Read up on how they are made, and you'll understand how easily, and common this can occur. You also have to understand that every company has a different policy of what an acceptable amount of dead pixels a monitor can have before it passes QC. Most are 3. Some companies take a gamble with a monitor, and will play a wait and see game to see if it comes back as sometimes people just live with it. It could also simply be that this particular LCD got past QC. However, not that Samsung changed their policy it could also be that this was built before policy change. What policy? Read on.

Neon: You should know that as of Jan.01.05 Samsung instated a "Zero Dead Pixel" policy for any monitors sold from that date forward. So, no matter what, that monitor is covered under warranty. However, if it's a recent purchase, and under the sellers limited return/exchange policy, then by all means take advantage of it. It's faster to get it from the seller than it is to get it replaced by the manufacturer. When you do return it make the seller aware of Samsungs "Zero Dead Pixel" (if they are not already aware of it) policy if they decide to bitch about trying to bring it back.
