This might be a stupid question , but whats a double and single sided ram stick?

Are double sided ram 1g ,512mb and single sided ram 256mg or lower?
just that ive got a asus kv8 se deluxe and it says the best combo to fill the slots are to use 2 single(ddr400 )and 1 double(ddr 400) sided ram.
which give me a 333, how ever if i fill all the slots with double sided it gives me only 200.
so im a bit confussed on this

double and single sided just refer to whether there are memory chips on both sides of the PCB, or just one

generally most higher capacity chips are double sided
