arg.. i made a post and it didn't post ..
gotta repeat this.. 25 bucks is a harsh figured used out in the country.... however, in the city, i've found most will call it 5 bucks every time you start the car.. so lets use that figure shall we? the average person starts there car AT LEAST 2 times a day.... 5x2x30x12 (for a year)... that's $3600 in a single year to upkeep your car..... Is this true? Well throwing Fuel out the window as that's just a normal thing to require.... it's the other things... oil changes/filters/rad flush and anti-freeze/multi point inspections/tires....... basic maintenence. It also includes the more serious of things that could go wrong, such as Timing chain, valve going out, hell tranny packs it in. Why is it so expensive out in the country? i don't know about you guys, but we don't have paved, even graveled roads..... and here, it's bloody expensive cause we have the worst road on earth in saskatchewan. A smart car doesn't last very long even in the city.... Seriously.... about 5 bucks for city folks.... and 25 for country..... EVERY time you start your car...

I think it depends how far you go, and as you said, the conditions of the road and the weather too for that matter. (salt in the winter will kill a car fast)
My wife drives my car every day to work, but we live about 3 miles from where she works. it is a 10 year old car I bought for cheap and put a new engine in it when we got it. I do upkeep maintenance and whatnot, but there's no way we spend that much every time we start it, if we did we would be kicked out of out apartment and living in a cardboard box.. LOL.. I think 5 dollars is more like it for me anyway, if that. Over time it can be expensive though, depends on how lucky you are too.

and also, some cars are just lemons. it could be a known reliable car make (like honda), but that one particular vehicle was a "bad build", kinda like a bad batch

i gotta agree.
every time i start either one of my cars, theres really no costs going out on it. any and all maintainence is done by us at home. oil change, once every ~2500 miles for about 9-12 bucks. set of tires? easy 20-25K miles on a set of them, plugs are cheap as hell, the same as anti freeze. hell, even basic up keep for my corvette is pretty damn cheap. spent a couple hundred bucks to get it up and running and now it runs strong and pretty damn well.

Guys, i'm refering to the average joe with Canadian prices... call it 4 bucks US every time....
And driving short distances isn't exactly the greatest thing either.... but with good roads it should do well. Here..... within a year..... after good quality oil/filters (in the city, even i change my oil and filters up to 5 times a year..... in the country, up to 18+ a year.... I've got a damn good car, it's a 95 grand prix.... it's had various things replaced.... brake pads aren't exactly the cheapest thing.. i've had wheel alignments... tune up.... plugs..... alternator.... rad flushed.... fan rebuilt..... my gaud.... tranny oil changed and filter changed.. Only 100927kms on it (about 60,000miles) Initially, a decent car isn't going to cost all that much, but alot of people don't exactly have anything below 10 years old.... Majority of the average joes drive a 15 year old vehicle.... or a junker car that more then 5 years old...

My systems stay on 24/7 unless I'm working on them or have to reboot the system for various and asundry reasons. (e.g. after a game crash or some other event like that.)
My main rig is even on battery backup and I'm looking for another b/u for my 2nd rig. EDIT: Oh, I didn't notice that the topic had changed to cars. I work a job where, if I had to shutdown and start my car during my shift, I'd wear out the starter and maybe the battery every few weeks. So, during my shift, I normally leave the car running.

invest in a APC UPS.... they are worth every penny..... if you spend a nice chunk of cash on a good UPS from APC... you can get one that monitors and cleans the line....

Main machine gets shut down at night, while my server stays on 24/7 (which costs me $128 per year to run). Each one is on it's own APC Back-UPS XS 1200 UPS (listed as the Back-UPS BX 1200).
