939 Opterons going away

You can read the news

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28250

The Opterons are like the Socket A mobiles were, I was late to the Mobile Movement, (I did get two 2600's) so I need to have at least one Opteron. I went immediately to ZipZoomFly and ordered a in stock 148 for $238 US with 2 day FedEx free.

ZZF has 146 and 165 (Dual Core) on backorder. 144,148,150,152 in stock.

But they have one less 148 now!

Monarch computers has them too.

There's still some speculation on the whether and the why as of today...

For some interesting reading on the subject, head on over and read Ed Stroligo's commentary at

Overclockers

Remember, the articles are still speculation - I don't think AMD has come out and said 'no more'...

Drakon will become famous soon enough

Donator
Here's the thing. Is it really smart buying an opty since AMD is supposedly stopping production? I mean if you happen to buy one, it dies (heaven forbid) and AMD no longer makes it, then what would you get as a replacement? A X2 Processor of equivalent speeds?

Btw, how much of a performance boost does having 1MB of cache (on each processor for the dual core versions) give VS the 512K of cache on the X2 processors?

I saw a noticeable increase in smoothness with my Socket A Mobiles which I attributed (Perhaps wrongly) to the 512 vs the 256 L2 cache.

I am not sure, but I expect AMD hangs on to a supply of discontinued CPUs to support the market. I only had one CPU go bad and that was a XP2600 (Small Cache), AMD did replace it with a XP2700. I am not yet a dual core fan, maybe later.

Probably quite a bit, look at the performance of the Pentium M processors (2M cache!) compared to performance for a desktop pentium 4 (512K or 1mb cache) - in certain applications the Pentium M can run with P4s that clock 500+ Mhz faster or more.

The 6xx series just released recently have 2mb cache as well now.

In theory, a large cache makes a larger difference in processors with deep pipelines, as the P4 series does (20+ stages deep). Athlon processors don't have pipes as deep - I think they are like 12 or 14 (one of those numbers sticks in my head from somewhere...) stages deep.

Its not only the cache that helps with the Pentium M, it has a shorter pipeline which helps with certain tasks.
