IDE to USB device keeps disconnecting

Plug in, 5 seconds later, it shows as being undetected. Also hear the "disconnect" sound.

It happens to an external HD drive, and a recent DVD USB drive.

Only happens when reading/writing. Never happens when idle.

I just want it to perform normally.

check the USB cable/socket, make sure they're well connected
also if possible, try replacing the cable or changing socket

Socket good. Cable, Like I said, I have an HD, and a USB IDE one.

Both of them different.

No offense, and not to be rude, but I need answers that are beyond superficial. Simple things like "check cables, check if jumper is in correct position, check if DVD drive was working in IDE" and so on and so forth, I already tried those. Now, I appreciate all the help I can get, but I need help that might actually be of use.

I have googled to no ends, and have NOT found one single solution to this.
There is one last resort, and that's reformatting, or cleaning usb drivers. But I'd like to see if there's solutions that aren't so time consuming.

Edit: When searching through google, there are problems exactly the one I have. One thing though: none of them have a solution. Either they stop responding because they have found a solution, which they didn't post (damn you), or they merely gave up.\

Edit2: Going to try another IDE to USB cable. One that isn't like... crap no-brand one. Apparently, some people get those problems. But it doesn't explain why my External HD, which has a IDE to USB connection, doesn't work. Maybe shoddy parts as well? But it works on my other PCs. Just not this one.

Borrow a powered hub, and see if that fixes it. It could just simply be a power issue.

Yes, running SP2.

Don't think it's a power issue. It works on my old PC, which has USB 1.1, and doesn't work on this one.

My PSU is a 550W Antec, and I have tried with internal PSU (Antec), and then its own mini-power supply thing. Both do not work.

Oh god, please, swimtech, please have an answer for me.

Another thing, Yes, I have unticked the "allow this device to be turned off to save power".

You might be on to something there. A lot of times devices draw more current than USB ports can handle. Description of problem reinforces that assumption.

Edit, maybe original poster can watch this screen when device is working,,

Edit2 -
I also have noticed that the length of the cable makes a difference.

It only listed as 10 mA while idle.

Also, it was on its own root hub.

So, can it actually use up 500 mA? I doubt it. And like I said, it had its own PSU, and also tried the internal PSU. Neither worked. So, it may not be that.

Also, when device is "active", as in reading or writing, the device disappears.

Edit in response to BWX's edit: Cable length? Elaborate.

Ok, just tried in that regard. Can't tell "active power" due to it disconnecting once reading.

The thing is it works fine on other PCs. You have no other problems with other USB devices.

To me that says two things.

1. There is nothing wrong with the device.

2. You have no software issues.

The problem maybe your USB controller itself. I still think you should try an external powered hub.

Another point is you're dealing with USB 2.0 & 1.1. Heck, it even could be some kind of interference issue. USB problems can be a real pain to trouble shoot since the problem can move around on you.

I was just going t0 post that.. mayne a look through the mobo BIOS is in order to see what the settings are.

Also maybe mobo driver could need updating/re-installation?

edit- also:
Maybe the device uses USB 2.0 only when in use? And that is not enabled or something? Something to double check I guess..

Tried the self-powered hub.

Well, it stayed connected.

One problem: Disc could not be detected.

Ok, at least I MIGHT have solved the "staying connected" part.

It's a NEC 2500A. Any issues with that being USBed?

Anyways, going to try the Sony drive that I have, and see if that one works.

Nope, not working either.

I guess I have to try the External HD.

Well, let me check if I need to update firmware. Last I updated was... last summer?

Anyways, about the disc not being detected, the drive is still there. But it reverts to a "CD Drive" with "RAW" format. When ejecting the disc, it stays that way. Only way to reset it is by replugging.

What sucks about external enclosures is they recommend "not" using an external hub for this reason. You might just end up having to get an internal PCI USB card.

I had problems with jumpers on an IDE to USB drive, it worked on some computers but not others. I know you said you checked it and that we shouldn't be giving you advice like that, but just because you've checked something doesn't mean it wasn't overlooked.

Well, one thing though. It USED to work on this PC. At least the external HD did. It worked without problems. Then one day, it started to screw up on me.

Ok, I went to the event log and found this whenever I was trying to DVD-USB it.

"An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom1 during a paging operation."

Anyone know about it?

Yeah, saw that by searching on Google. None of them know how to fix it.

Apparently, I also searched, and VIA USBs have a problem with... a lot of things. So maybe, I might just get a USB PCI-card.

I fixed it.

I finally fricking fixed it.

How?

Bought an IDE to USB cable that wasn't so cheap.

Bought this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...4739&CatId=468

Only one problem: I need a usb extension =P. USB cord is too damn short lol.

And it's ungodly slow. My DVD playback runs SLOOOOW, and it skips on audio and video.
