If your current computer just doesn't cut it, I would suggest waiting until Prescott and Hammers are out in force and mature motherboards are out for both... the K7 proc (XP) is seeing it's sunset - it had a good run, but its starting to get somewhat dated... I would say Hammer...

i would wait till hammer chips had been out for at least a year before i bought one, id like to see some benchmarks and price drops before id commit to a whole new platform...
i dont beleive that anyone will really need anything more speed-wise than a high-end athlonXP for a few years yet, programs and games are just not that advanced, and are becoming more dependant on dedicaded hardware, such as video and audio processors. my advice is that you go for a cheaper processor, such as an athonXP 2100+ and invest in a high-end graphics card and sound card.

Look at it this way. Pick up an Athlon 2000 for under $100 and use it for about a year and then sell it. Buy a Hammer when it's cheap. Are you that psyched to buy a brand new processor at that high of a price...it'll be about $400. PLUS a motherboard.

I am waiting on the Hammer. My XP 1800 is working just fine. I will build a new system when Hammer prices come down and is proven to perform well.
Good luck. |

Just overclock your 1800+ when it starts feeling slow.

I would just buy an Athon xp 2000+ or higher MB combo for around $100 for now and the vid card of your choice and you should be good for a year or so and then do it again

I would definitely wait for the hammers. AMD is supposedly shooting for at least 2 GHz with their hammer release about a quarter from now, so it should be nice. I'm waiting through a 1.33 Tbird. It hasn't really seemed too slow yet, but I still can't wait for the hammers.

What's the point in paying full price for a new processor? Wait like 4 months and get it cheaper.

Impulse buying is always in effect when buying computer related hardware. I did however, just buy an AthlonXP 2000+, and it was a big improvement over my Athlon T-Bird 1Ghz. As of right now, I have no plans on upgrading to a Hammer when they're available. Although, as I read the reviews, I'm sure I'll be drooling and wishing I had one.

Just get a system with a mobo that SUPPORTS a hammer.. but use an athlon XP with it.. This way, when hammers become mainstream, you'll be able to use it.

Er, Hammer is NOT going to be Socket A - it is going to have its own 753 pin socket, and you most definitely wouldn't be able to use an Athlon XP in a hammer board...

If you really have your heart set on owning a Hammer, as it seems you do, wait for it. But if you need a little speed now, check out the prices for the varios parts that you may need, and build up something to tide you over. Then when the hammer comes out and is actually doing what it is expected to do, sell the temp system to a friend that needs an upgrade. Maybe your system is just what they need as a "step up".
