HardDrive Warranty

I feel Maxtor and Western Digital changing their Warranty to one(1) YEAR instead of 3.

Right now, only Western Digital 8mb drives have 3 year warrenty.

What do you guys think?

If they did, that's no so good. That used be a nice feature about them.

Well, the way I see it, is that when they reduce the warranty length, they are paving the way for cheaper hard drives... because the companies no longer have to subsidize repairs for older drives... I really don't think that it matters overmuch - hard drives are quite cheap now, and if a hard drive doesn't fail quickly, it will probably have some good staying power (excluding those IBM's before the 120GXPs...)

I wouldn't know, maybe they also cut production costs at the expense of quality.

I know it's not a HDD, I had this TEAC CD540 (40x CDROM), very good unit... the writer, still TEAC, but newer - well, it's not necessarily bad, but the mechanics are a little worse, you don't get that feel of security - do you know what I mean

Oh, and I think this should go in the Tech forum.

i agree.

as for the hard drive warranties, my 2 year old maxtor 30's are doing quite well, and my wd 80 se's are also doing quite well. since i usually buy new hard drives every 18 months, i have no issues with warranties. that and if a drive lasts longer than a year it will most likely last longer than 18 months for me.

System Specs

well the standard as I undersatnd it is warranty is 3 years for retail boxed (like you would buy at staples/circut city)and like 1 year for oem units...(like you would see on pricewatch.com come in just a static bag) nd thier currend drives warranty period fer example my maxtor 60 gb warranty period is undertermaned. Becouse they base it off of whan the will stop production of a paticular drive...and they are still makeing them
