What Are the Future Trends???
HI
Last year I bought an AGP MOBO computer and assumed (wrongly) that AGP cards would continue being produced. Is there, are there advancements coming down the pike in the next 6 months such as new GPU's beiong developed by NVidia or ATI that would be worth waiting for? In regards to PCI-e.....Just curious. I notice in benchmarks between AGP and PCI-E there really is not much, if any difference in performance. With all of the technological hype built around PCI-E, what is the advantage? Will it be worth waiting for advancements in PCI-E that will really take advantage of the benefits of the technology? Thanks for any insight.

http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...?cid=1&id=1344 here is a technical answer. Short answer, more bandwith, good for SLI, etc.
The best answer is, "because they say so". Really, the best advantage to the consumer is that you will be able to get card in PCIe format, and not AGP format. You won't see any huge differences between an AGP GF6800 and a PCIe GF6800 As far as waiting goes, the boards that take advantage of all lanes (the 32x boards) are out, but aren't cheap. Honestly, I would doubt there is a huge difference between them and the 16x ones. Its going to be a while and this tech is pretty new and untapped, but I think its here to stay (maybe as long as AGP was). I would say, keep your board if you are happy with your card and wait to upgrade next time you are upgrading your GPU. ATI are currently working on versions of their newest cards in AGP format, so you may want one of those if you will be upgrading. |

Thanks for the reply.
Good to hear that about the ATI cards. My X800XT PE will be getting long in the tooth quickly. Considering the somewhat embarrasing trowncing delivered by Nvidia recently, probably a good idea. Thanks
