AMD Opteron 146 Venus any good?
I want to spend less than 200 bucks on a new cpu to go along with my new EVGA 7800GT card. I'm leaning towards either the 3200+ Venice or the Opteron 146 Venus. Which would give me more bang for my buck? Will the Opteron 146 give me a better chance of hitting 2.6 GHz? I'll be using an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Motherboard by the way. I know it's a cheap board but I like the fact that it supports both AGP and PCI-express and I really have no need to run sli at the moment. I've heard that ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard overclocks pretty well with some particular bios updates. Btw, is this the 146 Venus cpu? »www.pcconnection.com/ProductDeta···D=k15506
It's going for 181 bucks there and seems like a great deal but I'm worried because the box looks different compared to what newegg shows.... anyone??? |

Depending on the stepping of the cpu will most likely depending how well they clock. there are CABNEs and CABYEs, I believe the CABYEs clock better. Personally I'd take the 146 since it has twice the cache.

Thanks for the reply Lowfat. Btw, I mentioned that the picture of the Opteron 146 at the website I mentioned shows a different box compared to what newegg shows. Should I be worried? Is it the Venus Opteron 146?

I noticed that the cpu was on back order for that particular website. eCost has it for about 180 after taxes and such. It's labeled as OPTERON UP 146 PIB 939 P. What does the PIB mean?

well both the 146 and the 3200+ will OC and most likely take you to 2.6. Almost all venice's will get to 2.6... some of the bad ones top out about there on air. (Mine only goes to 2.7 :-( ) but many of them will get to 2.8 on air and 3.0 on water. the opterons have been going much farther... 2.9-3.0 on air and I've seen them at 3.4 on water. granted not all stepings will do that... but even the worst stepping should get you to 2.6. I'd say go w/ the opty worst case they'll oc bout the same as a venice, they have 2x the cache and best case they'll go higher.

werd. The opty has twice the cache, even if it does'nt clock as well its still the better choice.
