new comp is dead!! psu mebbe?

So I built myself a new machine a few months back in an Antec Overture II enclosure. It's a pretty power hungry machine with a Pentium 820 dual cpu, Asus P5WD2 mobo, Radeon X850, 2 SATA hard drives and 2 PCI audio cards (one for games, the other a MOTU 424 for heavy duty digital multitrack audio I/O).
The other day I was working on an audio project and the MOTU unit start freaking out making some horrible noises, then the screens froze and then started displaying flashing nonsense and the whole machine went dead. It started up again just fine and worked since then but this morning after hooking up an external USB hard drive the whole machine went dead and won't start back up.

I'm thinking the power suppply has had it, any other ideas?

the system went dead on the second time could be due to southbridge chipset on the motherboard is damaged by static electricity of the USB device through the USB port.

so, this could be a PSU problem, or any hardware connecting on the motherboard or even the motherboard itself is damaged.

Well the computer has rebooted itself before when I plugged in that external USB drive.
But the problems a cupla days ago were when it wasn't connected.
I'm hoping PSU cuz it'd be easiest to fix.

it won't turn on at all. The power light doesn't come on, nothing happens.
I think it still has power cuz the light on the ethernet jack is on but that's all.

remove or disconnect all of the hard drives and other unnecessary hardwares from the motherboard.
then try booting your computer with a bootable diskette and see what happens?

also, if you have another PSU (maybe from your friend) then try it on the system. and see?
