Flash Memory Reader Gone Belly-up

I've had one installed for quite some time now. It's a 9-in-1 Flash Memory Card Reader with one USB connection and sits in one of the CD Drive bays.

Well, the USB connector works fine, but, the device fails to install now and produces a "!" mark in Device Manager. I've uninstalled, removed, rebooted, reconnected, several times now to no avail.

Looks like I'll be checking out memory readers tomorrow.

I really do like these as it allows me to pop out my camera's flash card and simply push it into the reader for easy photo transfers.

UPDATE:

Well, I don't have to spend money on a new reader after all!!

This time it was WINDOWS' (aka MICROSOFT'S) fault!!

Somehow Windows got it into its head that there was a specific driver (Genesys) that was controlling this reader and it had it all wrong!

I finally did a manual Driver Update and refused to let Windows select the driver. This time, it installed everything and all of the particular flash card readers are now recognized and working.

So, as we've all known all along: Don't trust Microsoft very far.

Not yet. But I thought about it while I had it removed from this system.

sometimes, you might find that the same Plug-and-Play hardware device gets installed correctly by the Windows on the other Windows system but not yours. this might be due to one of the PnP levels is missing on your Windows system.

you can report this to the maker of the card reader if you wish to help them improve the PnP function on this product.
sometimes, the maker already knows that the XP's PnP manager won't be able to detect, nor might offer a wrong driver when you're tying to install it. you also might recieve the proper instruction on how to install the product under the Windows XP from them.

What was the key for me on this particular situation was when I did the Update Driver and then got to the Show Compatible Devices. It wasn't showing the Genesys drivers....only the USB Mass Storage Device. Before this, I kept allowing Windows to try to detect and install drivers and kept getting the wrong ones. The clue for me was when I took the unit out of the case and saw, finally, that it was a SOYO product.

like i said DS, sometimes the maker of the the card reader already knows that and also know very well how the user can install it properly under the Windows XP. whether or not thay provides the instruction?, this i don't know.

anyway, instead of explaning this instance on this forum only. as i see you've found out something that may be new to the others (might also include the maker of this product themself), email them a couple lines of the instance (if you choose to do so), i mean you can copy/paste the words that you already typed here on an email and then just send it. not even you can help the other more you might be surprise what you might get from doing this.
