AMD Heatsink-Thermal Paste-installing new CPU ? Please
HI
Thanks for your time and help. I have serched regarding this question but have not found anything specific. Sorry for the (most likely) redundant questions regarding thermal paste. I have only installed one other CPU and it was in an intel system a couple of years ago and the issue of thermal paste was not an issue. I ordered an Athlon 64 4000, San Diego core CPU, received it, got ready for the instal (opened computer, CPU box, got tools out, et.) and read that I had to go to the AND web site and search for the correct thermal paste for the CPU?! Great. But...looking at the heatsink, it looks like the heatsink already has (what appears to be) a layer of thermal material on it....is that what the grey patch is? I am assuming so. So, the question is, is AMD suggesting adding another layer atop of theirs? Or, is the thermal compound already there good enough? Would you suggest applying (better-differeent) thermal paste than what is on the heatsink? Thanks for your time and help.

The thermal pad that is on there is fine for stock type applications where no overclocking is involved. There is nothing additional needed. However... if you wish to overclock the chip at all or just want it to run cooler, then a different type may be needed.
If you choose to go that route, you need to clean off the old pad completely before you use anything different. There is some info here: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/motherboards-networking-misc-forum/96473-how-remove-heatpad-cpu.html on how to do that.

on my new build the beginning of Jan, i ordered the 3700(prices are great!) upon installation i scraped the pad that came on the sink off with a plastic trowel type divice i had, it was clean and unused mind you, then cleaned the sink with acetone(nail polish remover) to remove the excess scrapings, the when about my bizznass applying arctic silver 5, doin good here it seems, maxes out at bout 45c under prime load at 257*10.5= 2.7(stock cooler\ 1.45 or 1.475 volts, not sure yet all seems stable in windows at 1.45 but prime errors after bout 7/9 hours)

actually that grey colored patch on the bottom of the hsf is thermal paste... it's not a pad. but you do not need to add any more.
if you want better performance you can clean that off and use some AS5. Just put a tiny bit in the center of your cpu... size of a bb or smaller. then put the hsf down and it will spread out accross the cpu. you can use rubbing alcohol an q-tips to clean off thermal paste, but I've found that coffee filters work much better as they are lint-free and are easier to work with. Also, ArciClean works much better than anything else I've ever used. it's a 2 part solution. 1: a thermal material remover that literally disolves any type of thermal material. and 2: a surface purifier that preps the surface of the cpu and the hsf
