Here's something you might be interested in. CDRinfo did a comparison of SATA vs SATAII which you can read HERE. Specfically, they tested the WD2500JS SATAII drive vs the WD3000JD SATA drive.

In short, you may or may not notice it, but from the tests SATAII is "theoretically" faster in some cases. However, one thing of interest is that your board has to support SATAII. Otherwise the SATAII drive will work as a SATA drive.

One suggestion: if you can afford to pay a little more I would pickup the WD2500KS instead since it has a 16MB buffer vs the WD2500JSs 8MB. With that extra 8MB buffer you should see a little performance increase even if you use in a SATA setup.

If you in the USA try newegg there is virtaully no price difference
Don't get the WD anyways look for a HITACHI Deskstar T7K250 250GB
if it going to be your OS drive other wise get the samsung 120P .

have a good read

http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200601/250_1.html

I read some others as well each time the samsung and hitachi win out
samsung for transfer rates, hitachi for gameing prefromance
due to better acess times...

I just order a HITACHI Deskstar yesterday...

(Raptors are still king but cost to much and don't have as much space)

I'm using 2 Samsung SATA 160 GB drives in my system. Although my system supports RAID, I'm not using them under a RAID array. One is simply my OS/System drive and the other is for storage. Both of these have been in my system now for about a year. I'm very happy with their performance.

I did a bit of checking, and the WD2500KS will run you about $200 AUS dollars. Saw it at a few places online such as i-Tek, MegaPC, and Nintek which are all Aussie stores, but as you said, it's above your price range.

Question for you: The J series only has 8mb buffer, while the K series has 16mb (there is also a Y series that has 16mb too), so is someone listing it as having 16mb? If so, it could be that they are misquoting the buffer size, or they are selling the WD2500KS ,and mistaking it for the WD2500JS. I'd double check with the seller just to make sure.

You'll have both SATA and IDE connections available, so choose depending on which drive you want / how much you want to spend. SATA isnt much more, but then isnt that much quicker really, i just love it because the cables are so small in comparison :-)

SATA2 and SATA 150 there is little difference other then theatrical or bandwidth
from the drive to the system is increased. The drive it self it still the bottle neck.
Big thing about SATA2 is NCQ which seem to improve overall performance

If you can do SATA do it as PATA controllers use more resources / cpu.
Also the very old PATA design is inefficient by comparison with the way
signals are sent and received.
