New Build Questions. Dual Core?

well this celeron is just pissing me off supremely, so the credit card is getting abused.

Looking at 2 cpu's, first:

Intel Pentium 4 820 Dual Core "LGA775 Smithfield" 2.8GHz (800FSB) - Retail (CP-102-IN)
- Dual Core
- Level 1 Cache (Two 16KB Data Caches and Two 12KB Micro-op Execution Trace Caches)
- 2MB L2 Cache (1MB per core)
- Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel® EM64T)2
- Execute Disable Bit3
- Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3)
- 90nm Process Technology
- 800MHz front side bus speed
- Only compatible with Intel based 955X series mainboards

second:
Intel Pentium 4 640 "LGA775 Prescott" 3.2GHz (800FSB) with HT Technology - Retail (CP-093-IN)
- 2MB L2 Cache
- EIST Technology
- Intel NetBurst microarchitecture
- Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology
- Hyper-Threading Technology

I'm guessing it's a no-brainer that it's dual core all the way, but thought I'd check just to be on the safe side

Graphics card:

again, I'm between 2, would appreciate your views guys
first:

Graphics Engine ATI Radeon X850PRO
Video Memory 256 MB DDR3
Engine Clock 507MHZ
Memory Clock 1.04GHz( 520MHz DDR3)
RAMDAC 400MHz
Bus Standard 16 lanes PCI Express
Memory Interface 256 bit DDR3
Max Resolution 2048x1536

second:

Gigabyte Nvidia GF 6800 GS - 256 MB
OpenGL 1.5, DirectX 9.0c
Video Memory Installed ( Max ) 256 MB - GDDR3 SDRAM

I'm presuming that the ATi would unlock to 16 pipelines seeing as how it uses the same core as the x850xt??

already bought 580w modular psu , and going to buy gigabyte's new flagship s775 mobo (i like gigabyte ) so they're sorted.

Your views gentlemen?

Just wondering why not consider the green team (AMD and NVIDIA)? Nothing wrong with the red and orange though..

I'd pick up the X2 3800+ over the P4 820. It's a mere $53 extra over the P4 820

i just really can't afford an X2.
I don't play many games either.

I'm pushing the boat out with a dual core P4 tbh.

and that cpu I can only find at £60 over my p4 here in blighty.

What do you think of the gf cards?

If price is of the utmost concern, then the 820 should suit your needs. What's the price difference between the video cards? If you do end up with the ATI card, then it doesn't make much sense to be investing on an SLI capable motherboard. If you don't mind giving a budget cap and a website of the store you're shopping at.. we can help you a bit more.

don't have a specific shop as such (although I like overclockers UK, great store ), and there is not a hope in hell that my gf will let me buy a second card for sli anytime soon, so thats why I was curious to know which card would perform the best as a standalone.

oh yeah, and there's only about £10 difference between the cards, the GS is £130 , the X850 £140 , both as cheap as I've managed to find in the UK yet, although I'd be delighted for someone to prove me wrong

6800GS will allow you to dip your toes into SM 3.0 while the X850 PRO will leave you wondering how it feels. Since I can't seem to find a review which pits those two head to head, I would have to infer that they're pretty close in performance. They do have their strengths in their respective games though (Quake/Doom for NVIDIA, HL2 for ATI)
