Alienware M17x Review @ DH

Read The Review Here
______________________

We recently spent some time with the Alienware m15x and the end result was the fastest 15 inch laptop we have ever tested. Today we look at the bigger brother, the Area 51 m17x which is marketed as a high powered gaming desktop replacement. So what goodies have we inside? How does a 2.8ghz Extreme Edition processor and two 8800 GTX M in Sli sound?

I hope it has better build quality than the 15.
Too bad that in a notebook review you can't review the after sales customer service common people get from Alienware...

Too expensive, even for a notebook and IMO not worth the money.
Having 4GB of RAM and Blue Ray drive will get you as you said close to 4000 GBPs. With the same amount of money you can buy a new desktop system that will surpass the speed of this one, each year, for 3 years.

The review was good, as expected.

We do try sometimes, and have done so before, but its a time consuming thing to do correctly and we really don't have the time to spend on that right now.

Obviously you guys are the best way for us to get feedback on a companies policies after a purchase and I can certainly pass it on.

Yeah, I agree, it is massively expensive and I wouldn't buy it myself. That said, there is an audience for these machines and I am amazed how many people buy them just to have something a little different with the badge. A bit like a fancy car at the end of the day, its a status symbol. It isn't for me personally but a review has to be more subjective than that, and right now if you want the fastest gaming laptop available, and have the money, this is it.

The Novatech take on SLI is a Quad core, Q9450 2.66GHz in the ordinary, and a 2.83GHz Q9550 and bigger hard drives in the Pro

Computer Supplies and PC Components from Novatech

Screen resolution isn't quite as high as the Alienware, and you don't get illumination. I also shudder at the possible battery life, with a full-bore desktop Quad CPU - this could well make the Novatech more a transportable than a portable!

With a 2.83 GHz Quad, the X90r should steal the "fastest gaming laptop" title, at a lower price point than the Alien. Just depends, on quad tuned workloads, it would be no contest, 4 cores versus 2, but are games tuned for quad?

Some are, as I found out.
Also, if you've ever seen a high definition laptop screen in real life, you'll never want a normal one again... haha

If I had the choice between a Macbook Pro and this design I would be tempted to get the Alien, because it holds promise, I dont game to anything close to an enthusiasts level and I just like the plain black finish with the little "look at me" Alien logo.

Damn good review as usual and refreshing to see very little bias for or against Alien again. Thats why I keep coming here.

Re: Alienware M17x Review @ DH

Interesting review and well done but the bottom line is who would buy a laptop for gaming in the first place

I represent this company for reviews but if I get a laptop I won't be gaming on it. A laptop will allow me to be outside during the summer doing techy stuff and sipping on PINTS
