AMD Phenom 2 X4 955 / MSI 790 FX / XFX 4870 X2 Review @ DH

Read The Review Here
_____________________

Today AMD release the latest AM3 processor, the 955 Black Edition, the first to have a real chance of competing with the 940 in that all important enthusiast market. Combined with a high specification 790FX based motherboard and ATI GPU it creates what could be AMD’s most powerful system ever.

Today we take a look at the latest performance figures from the AM3 (Dragon) platform using the 955, MSI’s new 790FX-GD70 and XFX’s 4870 X2. Is it finally time for AMD users to make the switch to DDR3?

if AMD could manage a way to make Quad channel memory controller.. using 2 sticks.... they would have a serious upperhand on their hands...

I'm really quite shocked no one has produced such a thing.

Actually i would suspect that oventually we'll be going back to a single stick of ram with all the benefits of dual/triple channel memory only faster.

As it's been playing similare to that of how Simms were (72pin) where they were paired.

Nice and professional review.
Although the performance (Phenom) is not up to par to the i7 cpus, with much lower cost and considering that even this performance is more than enough for all games out there, it doesn't make sense to get one instead of Intel solution.

Btw, near the end of the review

Re: AMD Phenom 2 X4 955 / MSI 790 FX / XFX 4870 X2 Review @ DH

I am actually planning on getting this CPU this week with the motherboard mentioned, I would like to know if it's still dual channel or triple channel memory, simply put, if I put 3x2 GBs will that slow down performance or what? (It looks dual channel according to review) and what memory is recommended (ON A BUDGET) with this CPU. I am thinking about getting the OCZ 6 Gig get off newegg on sale for 92.99 Newegg.com - OCZ XMP Ready Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory Hoping it's good
any comments?

Re: AMD Phenom 2 X4 955 / MSI 790 FX / XFX 4870 X2 Review @ DH

The Phenom is dual channel only and having uneven channels is not advisable. Your best bet is 2x4gb really and the speed should be 1333mhz, unless you plan to OC it. This would be a good option though if you want to stick with 1600mhz Newegg.com - OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Also, use the 1st 2 slots.

I appreciate the quick response. Thanks, I will probaably go with what you suggested, I do plan for some overclocking, I may run it at 1333 to setup. Thanks very much for the info

I went with the memory you suggested, and bought the MSI 790FX-GD 70, along with the phenom.... I was running a Athlon 4400x2 (Socket 939) and man, what a difference. hahaha
