Re: Future Sonics Atrio Earphones review @ DH

Having burned through a pair of $100 Bose and Sennheiser earbuds I checked these out when looking for a replacement and the reviews sound really good (though quite expensive). I'd probably have gone for them but couldn't find them for sale in any stores here.

These actually look pretty good I did note the earpiece coating issues perhaps they can address it. Great review and looking good overall

Great review Stuart - detailed and informative!

Always wondered - with regard to bass response - how much you think the coupling of the phones to the ear canal and the differing shape of each individual's ear and ear canal makes a difference in that frequency range to percieved reproductive quality?

I'm thinking that the manufacturers of higher end phones, such as these, do what they can in design to minimize whatever differences can occur regarding coupling the phones to the ear - but was wondering what your opinion and practical listening experience have allowed you to understand about that issue...

Re: Future Sonics Atrio Earphones review @ DH

Thats where the various fits are vitally important, when you try ones that dont fit well you immediately notice the difference when you get a good seal etc.

I have to say, having tried the 10 different types with Sennheisers IE8 and the various sets that arrived with the Atrio, Future Sonics foam pieces were without doubt the best. Very simple to use because you compress the foam between your fingers then insert and it expands to the shape of your inner ear giving an almost perfect sound every time...

reading the review, the major downside for me would be the level of bass... it may sound strange, but I'm one who prefers less bass, even with trance, but that's just a personal quibble

there's never any testing with any rap/hip hop, where a lot of people are using high end gear to listen to their music to...lot of low bass frequencies can be tested. my bose ear buds kinda ripped not happy! lets see if its covered

Re: Future Sonics Atrio Earphones review @ DH

In order to test a product such as this the reviewer needs to use material that they know inside out, either through listening to it a lot over a short period of time (a few months) or over a longer period but not necessarily as frequently. Without the knowledge gained from that process it is near impossible to pick out the small nuances between different products. It also helps if the reviewer enjoys the material.

In the case of rap and hip-hop, neither are to my taste and there is not a single track from either genre which I could use to fairly and accurately test a set of headphones.

I do feel though that given the mix of other styles of music used in the review every aspect of the Atrio was thoroughly tested and commented upon... after all there is no lack of bass in Metallica, Moby etc.

I agree Stuart the product has to be tested with material the reviewer is familiar with. Plenty of bass in the tracks used especially Metallica.

Re: Future Sonics Atrio Earphones review @ DH

Too much bass to me is the easiest of problems to fix. Every ipod I've had has a Bass Reducer setting would would remedy that. The only reason there's so much bass is that the fit is superb thus creating the proper seal for the bass to function. The last pair of Sennheisers I bought had the highest treble I have ever heard and they were nearly unusable without a custom equalizer (which I didn't have). Thankfully, my cat chewed them to pieces in less than 48 hours so I went with another Bose earbuds (first pair the right ear cut out after 6 months). They aren't as good as the Atrio's but they have a strong cord and the earpiece design is pretty good.

I also prefer less bass, I usually cut it in the sound panel under tone.
