Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
Read The Review Here
________________ Today Intel are releasing CPUs based on the Nehalem architecture but with prices and specifications designed to appeal to mainstream consumers. Today we will be putting two of these models through their paces and comparing them to existing i7 CPUs as well as AMDs top Phenom 2 model and the best Core 2 CPU. In addition to that we will cover various memory configurations and throw a handful of the more interesting P55 based motherboards into the mix with two aftermarket coolers. Massive review done here...great job!
I'm sure all sorts of benchmarks will be out soon but it would be interesting to see the comparatively priced i7 870 versus the i7 950. When the price drops, I'm definately looking at one of those 870's

I'm thinking better 860, since the difference is only 0.13 GHz, and can be found for even lower that its newegg price of 319$. Here is a link: Newegg.com - Intel Core i7 860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

Re: Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
Meh, I'm a little underwhelmed. These processors didn't really bring anything new to the table. Their only real advantage in comparison to the larger i7s is a lower cost. I'm still waiting for the next big jump in processing power from Intel or AMD.

I think the price point is very competitive tbh. Great detailed review guys, took me an hour to read it all. cant even begin to comprehend the work involved

Another new socket? I smell kickbacks.
They look like great processors but didn't the original 920 turn out to be unlocked? I'd like to see it overclocked to the top speed of its own family line and then compared to the new processors. |

Nice to see that the cpu temps are better than the LGA1366 based i7s.

Re: Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
Very comprehensive review i was thinking of getting a i7 920 but after reading that i might as well save some money and get the i7 870

Kizo is right...860 is only 0.13ghz slower yet about (for me in AUD) $300 cheaper..

Re: Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
I would really like to see some i5 750 numbers on the Photoshop benchmark with Turbo Mode enabled. I need to know if I should get the i5 750 or the 955 BE, ASAP.
Thanks.

Re: Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
HI, as the review was quite some time ago the system has been dismantled and components returned to manufacturers etc. If you want my opinion of which system would be better as an all round machine I would say the Intel.

Thanks Veridian. That's been the general consensus, but your opinion weighs more heavily. Thanks again.

Re: Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
I'd have to agree with Veridian. Photoshop has always proven to run better on Intel processors. Be sure to have plenty of RAM too. Minimum 4GB. It'll run on less, but PS runs so much smoother the more RAM you give it. Plus if you have CS4, consider getting a 64bit OS as Photoshop CS4 has a 64bit executable, and you wouldn't think it, but it runs even smoother on it.
On the same note, you may want to consider getting the i7 850 instead of the i5 750. They both have 4 cores, but the i7 850 includes HyperThreading, so you get 4 cores, but 8 threads, it has 4mb more cache, and a higher clock rate for around $100 more. |

Re: Intel Core i5-750 , I7 870 and P55
Sorry about that. I said i7 850, but I meant i7 860.
Oh, and just in case you miss my response in the other thread HERE: ...... I would go with an i7 860 instead of the i5 750. Higher clock rate, more threads, and more cache. And, when compared to the i7 920, I've seen benchmarks for i7 860, and I still have to wonder why Intel put that chip out as it's faster than an i7 920 on a cheaper platform. Not to mention the fact that it uses 1/3 less power. Check it out HERE. Save your money, and go with the i7 860
