There has been much debate recently on the stock levels of the current range of Nvidia and ATI (AMD) graphics cards and many partners of AMD have been complaining about the shortage of parts across the product range. As the 5000 series of parts is currently limited, partners have tried to meet their backlog for 4800 orders.

According to an industry insider who spoke to Driverheaven last night - Apple have purchased the complete 60 day stock of ATI Radeon 4000 series chips, focusing apparently on the HD 4850. This purchase order was in part way due to the fact that AMD are trying to get into the black for the Q3 2009 reports. With Dirk Meyer recently stating that AMD would get into profit again it certainly seems a logical reason for the mass order from Apple. Perhaps not '2 for the price of 1' but we are sure a very good deal was made for both parties.

The upcoming Apple machines are set to feature the ATI Radeon HD 4850 as a low cost but capable option to tie in nicely with the higher cost 4870 option. The date for this change on the Apple store is not yet set but we would assume within the next month of trading.

Many people have questioned AMD's purchase of ATI but it is clear that ATI are really helping AMD to earn money and perhaps this substantial order from the massive financial resources of Apple will push AMD into the black when the report hits.

Good news for AMD, but even better for Apple. They are improving. Perhaps by the middle of the next decade they will be able to have new cards just a couple of months after their release. Nice.

I don't think they could afford the custom cooler I have installed on mine. Unless they are willing to set an insane amount of money on my doorstep they cannot have it! End of Story.

Well, ATI sold only chips, cooler is up to the manufacturer. But given Apple reputation, they won`t stay on stock

It`s a great move for ATI/AMD not just because they made some money right now, but rather because it`s probably likely that the Apple/ATI cooperation will continue... In a long term it probably justifies short terms smaller profits.

I have seen this being said twice now. Nothing just an observation. Maybe this means that the 5000 series is going to falll hard. That would be a shame though cause they made a huge impression with the story about WOW on six screens. I still haven't worked out how to make compatible games work on more than one screen. I tried it with Flight Sim X, but maybe it was because my offload panel is 7" shorter than my center screen. Resolution issues and such.
