Apple deny netbook release - citing performance as an issue

There has been much debate recently over when Apple will release a low cost netbook for their user base. One of my contacts in the company over the weekend denied that they will in fact release one at all.

The reason is that Apple have said that they are not happy at all with the performance of the Atom processor and are not willing to release a low cost machine to compete with other PC based netbooks on the market.

The latest and cheapest release from Apple has been the new Macbook 13.3 inch which weighs 4.7 pounds. The screen has a resolution of 1280x800 and now uses an LED backlit - with the processing power handled by a 2.26ghz Intel core 2 duo processor. With a 250GB HD, optical and wireless the asking price of $999 (or £799 in UK) it is a fairly well priced 'entry level' machine for the Cupertino giant. We all know Apple will never release a $299 laptop, thats just not their style.

While the news of this 'non release' will come as a blow to many users who wanted an Apple netbook for a long time there is a good indication that an Apple tablet will indeed be released sometime in 2010. Estimating the price right now is as much guess work as anything else but we would assume it will be markedly lower than the Macbook we mentioned earlier.

Interesting, but I can't say I am surprised. I completely agree with their logic.

big suprise
UK consumers get screwed again
999$us is only just over 600 quid. where the hell does the 1/3 again on top come from?
see, 600 would almost be a fair price for that, but 800 is just too much

yeah you all in UK and Europe really get the shaft on american companies' products. It's almost highway robbery for some things.

I do see Apple's logic. they especially don't want to make a folley by releasing something so cheap and small that it really doesn't have the power that people want. Releasing something like that under Apple would probably cause them to lose ground in the market share if it were to fail and lets face it since they have such a bite right now they shouldn't try anything that would cause that to slip.

And hey let's face it. When you can get an MSI Wind to run Mac OS pretty well with an upgraded 2 gigs of RAM why bother with paying twice as much for a similarly sized and performance mac
