Geocities to shut forever today
Yahoo acquired Geocities around 10 years ago for a massive cost of 3.57 billion dollars and at 8am GMT on 27th they closed their doors.

The company was originally started in 1984 as a small ISP which was called Beverly Hills Internet. This was during the time when free internet hosting was a pipe dream and yet Geocities offered 6mb of webspace which was a massive amount of storage in its day.

When you think back and remember that Anandtech started on Geocities you start to realise just how important it was to the development of many multi million visitor sites today. Unfortunately Geocities didn't change with the times and their fate was sealed recently - a sad end to a very promising and pioneering concept. It also shows how little importance a 3.57 billion dollar acquistion can be in the grand scheme of things.

There were much worse offerings than geocities. I kinda liked geocities and had 1-2 sites on them. I even used one as a blog before(?) blogs appeared.

I had put mine up sometime in the 90's. They had "Street addresses" and "neighborhoods" at that time......

My first page was on Geocities and it feels like ages ago. Eventually they became ridden with advertising and I switched when later I could, but they were a strong catalyst for starting up the web.
