HD 5970 dual RV870 due for release - very soon

I had a chat this morning with an undisclosed AMD partner and a dual core R800 card is due for release at the end of November.

The cards are in development but many details are being kept hush hush but we reckon the brand name will be 5970.

With ATI already leading the performance charts, this is sure to push them even further ahead, and we can only sit back and wait until Nvidia have some kind of reply. We will keep you posted when we hear info (as long as we can word it so we don't break NDA!).

Wow that's quick, 5870's are barely in stores. But if you've got it flaunt it.

They need to capitalize on being the only ones with a DX11 solution and they also need something that clearly outperforms a 4870X2. As a consumer and tech lover, I say "Keep 'em coming!"

I wonder if they will have stock of the 5800 series anywhere in the near future, I know NCIX and NewEgg are out of stock on the 5850 and 5870. I got my 5850 local and they still have a couple as far as I know. If anyone in Canada is on the hunt they can try MysteryByte Computers

Re: HD 5970 dual RV870 due for release - very soon

Just so I don't get confused, this is not a 5xxx X2 card which is two GPUS on one card in a Crossfire setup but is a single GPU solution? How does this work? Will the system still recognise it as two seperate GPUs and limit you to Crossfire driver performance? Performance wise what are the theoretical improvements?

It is 2 GPU's on 1 board and yes they are both detected. It's basically Crossfire done on the board instead of using the ribbon connector. It should be superior to 2 separate cards connected by a ribbon and only uses 1 PCI-e slot

So it is a X2 card in all but the name?

I think I like it, reason being many times people would use X2 when they were talking about two cards and not the X2 model.

Uh, you just described the current X2 cards. If that's what they are talking about then it would hardly be 'news'.

Note, Z said DUAL CORE. That would be 2 GPU's on one chip, just like the multi-core CPUs, and THAT is news, as it would be the first multi-core GPU on the market.

Ati seems to sell all its gpu before Nvidia releases its hardware in market. It seems they r scared they won't sell anything once nvidia cards come out. lol

Or is it that they made extra cards already in haste to defeat nvidia and now they r launching them one by one.

What ever Ati will remain ati.

When you're done benchmarking it.... dibs
The 4870X2 ES I bought from Allan is still going strong today.

To be honest, if it gets released before christmas, I'll be waiting a little bit, since I won't actually be able to afford anything until after then. Still, driver maturity, partner brands and so on will hopefully be well-established by January.
Now just waiting on the MSI Fuzion board so I can do the rest of the job...

the 5970 is 12 inches. We jokingly refer to it as the "black man' video card. (no offense to coloured people on the forums!)
